Ameraucana thread for posting pictures and discussing our birds

Visually thats true , but the genotypes will result in off colors down the line . Most people [ me included ] would be unhappy to purchase blue Ameraunanas , breed them , and end up with EE colors .

Thank you very much
I will refrain from that cross. Appreciate the help!

Looks like one girl 3 boys...and yes one does look to have a straight comb. Lavenders are still a work in progress so irregulars pop up here and there. I usually have no problem rehoming pet quality lavenders. They are just so irresistible. The other three look really nice. The females' muffs look really nice! Watch the boys sometimes they are a bit lacking and might develop tiny waddles...which is another disqualifier.

You are right .... they are irresistible! That lavender color is just gorgeous!

I know! I wouldn't care if they were all boys or single comb- just to have some would be so nice

Seen as how my latest passion is making EEs- I'd love to make lav EEs with my black Orps! Or the faverolles would be fun too- but I don't know what happens to lav when crossed with salmon.

I got one of these, too. Gary was as puzzled as I was, so I e-mailed Mike Gilbert to see what he thought:

"Beth, this chick appears to be a throwback to when John B crossed in buff laced polish on his buff ameraucanas. Most buff ameraucanas are eW/eW (wheaten) at the e locus. This one is eb/eb (brown). Brown is recessive to wheaten, so apparently both its' parents were eW/eb. It could very well turn out to be a buff columbian or a black tailed buff. Interesting. Thanks for sharing.

Hey thanks so much Blackbird12 and Harry!
I think this is the thread Harry referenced for anyone else that might be interested.

PS, Harry I need some of those all lavenders! I only hatched splits last year!

pipsnpeeps:
He has some partridge genes.....
Gary got his start in buffs from me and I see that from time to time. This buff bird is not wheaten based and is why it has dark legs.

Pips, where did I say they came from Gary? Only you and Gary have Buff?

Thanks for the info mmfarm, interesting how long ago did John B make that cross?
I guess anything can pop up at any time if the stars are aligned right!

I'm sure there is a book that explains this color business so maybe BUMPKINS (me)

can follow some of it. Can somebody give me the name and where it can be purchased? Thanks in advance.

John has buffs too. Some of my flock came from him and some came from a small hatchery that has since gone out of business. I also acquired birds from Paul Smith which originated with Jay Horn from CA, he is a buff orpington breeder. There are not very many people that are actively breeding them. I don't think Gary is an active member of the club, so he is not listed on the breeders list.
