Ameraucana thread for posting pictures and discussing our birds

I have about 20 pullets in my coop, some hatched April 2009, some in January, most in April of this year.

This is the wonderful roo I got from Jean,.... His name is Geoffry

You can see how tough the heat has been on him this summer... he is about 13 months old and so far I have HIGH fertility with him.

This next one is a pic of a roo hatched out April 25th, 2010... so he is just 3.5 months old. Already he is BIGGER than Geoffry.

We named him Gentry. The only thing so far that I don't like about him is his legs are slightly lighter than Geoffry's... and he has that one stray tail feather with too much brown in it.

What do you all think at this stage for keeping him in the coop to help Geoffry out for breeding season come November?

Does he have potential?

Hi everyone, I'm toying with an idea. It's just something I thought of, but I had a few questions that I need to know before I pursue it any farther:

1) How big are the biggest Ameraucanas out there? I've heard that they run on the "small side", but I'm not sure how small that is.
2) Is anyone breeding lines that are really good dual purpose birds with solid size and growth and good egg laying ability?
3) How easy is it to lose the dark legs in out-crosses?
4) At this point, are there any colors that are better known for size and productivity, etc?

I think that's all I have. I would greatly appreciate any help I can get!

Large fowl cocks are 6.5 lbs and the hens are 5.5 at maturity. I personally do not think a bird this size would be considered table fare, but to each their own.

The whites are the biggest at my place and if paired with the barred gene, you lwould ose the skin melanizers and get light legs. (which is a gene already established in my flock that I am desperately trying to get rid of)

Can anyone point me to the picture of the "white" looking wheaten cockerel that someone posted on this thread in the past couple of weeks. We are discussing some oddities popping up in the breedings this year over at the ABC.

Thanks,

Jean,

Did you see my post above?

What do you think of my 3.5 month old roo? Amazingly he's already as big as Geoffrey....
