Wow, what a pretty egg! I have a wheaten and a blue wheaten from Jean as well, they're coming up on 21 weeks. After seeing your egg I am extra hopeful to have some soon as well!

I have chicks due to hatch Sept. 17th from Pips and Peeps. They will be Lavender or Lavender split (I think black?) so as soon as they are old enough to tell the gender I might have some extra pullets. I live only an hour and a half from you.

That would be awesome! I go over the pass (on 80) often when the weather's not horrible. It would be easy to pick up some gals from you. I'd love to have a couple lavenders.

So, from what I understand, Lavender is just a diluted Black. Correct? So what happens when I cross the lavender gals with my black roo? I've read about the black, blue and splash crosses but am confused as to where the Lavs come in here. I'd still love some lavs, even if I can't breed them, but I'd sure like some info on this.

I'm also considering getting a wheaton roo for my wheaton gals. I have been offered one from the same batch as mine came from (John's birds). Would there be any advantage to breeding the wheatons instead of the blacks/blues? Other than I can start in early spring instead of the year after (since these pullets are about 21 weeks now). Here's a pic of one of my wheaton gals...

Is she worth trying to get a good roo for? I'll try to get more pics of her and her sister later if that would help.

This latest idea is your fault urbanfarmboi! I wasn't planning on breeding the wheatons cause I heard the color wasn't as good but that gorgeous egg you just posted! Beautiful!

Just noticed she looks more blue wheaton with her black feathers not showing from the front. I'll try for more pics.

Beautiful Wheaten hen!!! I hate to temp you, but I also have Wheaten/Blue Wheaten eggs incubating with the Lavenders!

I'm sure I'll have extra roos! I am new to the Lavenders, but I think they are a double diluted Blue. They are refered to as self Blue so Lavender x Lavender = Lavender. I think when crossed with black you will get 50% black and 50% Lavender. Some of the experienced breeders can jump in here and explain it better than I can!!

I will put your name on my Buddy list and contact you when I know what sex the chicks are

Lavender x black = 100% visual black split for lavender. You'll have to breed them back together, or to a visual lav to get more lavs.

BTW- blacks have much better egg color,so crossing them into the lavs will help in the long run.

So, I have another question. What percentage of Black and Lavender chicks will you get when you breed Lav/Split x Lav/Split? And will you get all black chicks when you breed Lav/Split to Black? I Believe that I have Lavender, Lav/Split, Lav/Split x Lav/Split eggs from Pips and Peeps. I know she gave me eggs from all three of her breeding pens.

I *think* with the splits you should get about 50/50.. Of course you'll get more lavs from a lav x split breeding. I'm going to have 3 pens eventually.
1- lav x lav
2-black x lav
3- split x lav

I might throw some of my big black orps in with one of the lav roos and make some split and eventually big lav EEs. Depends on how my Orloffs do this winter.

This is a very interesting lesson in genetics!

Should be fun to see how many Lavenders I get from these combinations!!

I will be happy with the Blacks also. They are stunning! Sounds like you have some fun breeding plans for the future!

Good Luck!

Breeding two splits together will give you only 25% lavender, 25% black and 50% split lavender.
