Ameraucana thread for posting pictures and discussing our birds

LOL! That's why I like the wheatens! The same thing happend to me with the splits. They didn't show thier true colors until about 3 months old. The lavs are a bit easier, but I still might up with a surprise roo. The "three rows" tip is pretty good one, but sometimes the outer rows are hard to see.

I promised no hatching so I could get some blue copper marans. Those baby pics make it VERY tempting.....

How is it that when we order "AMERAUCANA WheatonLarge Fowl" chicks from a reputable breeder (as I did)we can end up with
1) what the experience people on this page call "EE"s
2) a mix of Blue Wheaton Splash
3) very few true looking Wheaton Ameraucanna?

Was I robbed?

Where did you get them? Who said they were EEs?
If someone has 2 blue wheatens breeding together you will get some blue and splash wheatens. Splash does show blue spots. The are not an "accepted" color, but are a natural part of the BW color family. Lots of people would love to have them in their flock, especially if they only hve regular wheatens.

I got them from a breeder in Wisconsin I found on the ABC website. I asked for Wheatons. On BYC some people have said I have EEs because they don't look right. ( see my page for some pics) This is the correspondence I have with the breeder -

Dear :
The chicks are now 5 weeks old and doing well. They have been vaccinated for Mereks, Newcastle, Infectious Bronchitis, and in a few weeks Fowl Pox. I have a furter question if you have time.
They are all "Wheaton Large Fowl Ameraucanna unsexed chickens so as they grow, I should be seeing 2 different colors coming out - roos & hens - but there are 3 distinctive colors: "Blonde", "Dark", and "Grey". What have I got here?

Dear :
The lightest brown chicks will be the blue wheaten females, if they are a little darker they will be the wheaten females. The very dark ones will be wheaten males, with the darker ones with blue feathers will be blue wheaten males. Then if you have some that look more grey with just some dark lacing these are the splash males. All these colors come out of the wheatens, as the blue gene is recessive and shows up even in wheaten/wheaten cross.
They look nice.

Yes, I agree with him they look nice. The silver grey ones are hens though and this is not what I signed up for.

I looked at your page they look like perfectly nice Wheatens and Blue Wheatens to me your going to have to post a closer pictures of these "silvery grey" hens. He sounds like a perfectly nice and very knowledgeable breeder don't be to quick to judge. Please take some close up pictures and post them on her and then you will know for sure. Even if there is something wrong just send him a pictures and ask him what happened some time recessive genes pop up that don't show themselves in the parent stock.

Ha- Henry I didn't even think to look at the BYC page. Yep- those look like a bunch of wheatens to me. I don't know who told you they were EEs, but no- you were not robbed. I wish I had that many to work with!

Those are all wonderful looking birds! It looks as if you have a mix of wheaten and blue wheaten pullets and cockerels. Whomever told you they were ee's doesn't know what they are talking about and I would advise against taking any more advice from them about the birds.
