Ameraucana thread for posting pictures and discussing our birds

BW - NECK: Hackle -- even shade of wheaten with some luster. Front of Neck -- light creamy wheaten

WTN - NECK: Luxurious medium shade of wheaten

No mention of black, so it is not supposed to be there, but you've got to work with what you have.

I have a couple of pullets that I hatched out from Wayne Meredith eggs that have more black in the hackles than I like. The BWs are fine, it's mostly on the wheatens from him. I've culled until I now have the 17 best pullets/hens... I'll be getting out the incubators for my 2nd Annual New Years hatch around Thanksgiving.... setting eggs on Dec. 10th or 11th.

All of the pullets I hatched from Jean's, Kathy's (Peachick) and Melissa (Pasofinofarm) have real nice uniform color in the neck.

I'm just waiting to see egg color and then I'll decide if I'll sell them or not.

Some of these birds don't lay until they are 7 months... some start as early as 5 and 1/2.... they're all different, and my youngest pullets hatched the last week of April. I'm hoping they are laying by Thanksgiving.

pips&peeps :

I haven't hatched a decent cockerel all year.....

True for me and my Faverolles as well. After breeding a few Ameraucana and also breeding Faverolles I feel breeding bearded and good type males is much more difficult then finding good hens and pullets.

I wish I had more time to spend going through all the posts. It looks like others are experiencing the same problem with black ticking in the hackles that I have. I have gotten rid of all my birds that developed the ticking. I still have a LOT of young juveniles so it is going to be awhile before I can tell how they turn out. Once they are fully developed I hope to be able to go back through my breeding plans and see if I can find a pattern that will tell me where the ticking may come from. At the very least I hope to pinpoint the problem down to the male or female.

This has been a tough year for me. My original plan was to hatch a ton of birds and cull like crazy. What is it they say about the best of plans? I did hatch a bunch of birds - probably 250-300 - but I also lost a bunch. Between power outages, a rat getting into a brooder and slaughtering a bunch of chicks, sick birds, the weather, you-name-it, I also lost a bunch of birds. I might have 50 left and half of them are cockerels.

I will say that I have managed to make some real progress in the tail color. I don't think I had any real good color in any of my original birds. I know have pullets with full black or blue tails and a couple of cockerels with no red in their tails at all. Of course, wouldn't you know it, my best looking Wheaten pullet that has a gorgeous tail is also clean-faced.

Oh well, there is always next year...

God Bless,

My whites are almost ready to lay...all the signs but no eggs yet. My roo is perfect. No yellowing in the saddle feathers. I hope to show him this month. They came from Jean of course. I'm really debating getting silvers and buffs...I love all the colors but I better stick with my current breeding project. I got about a month and a half before my F1 lavender wheatens start to lay.

Nice to see you Royce! Sorry you are having a rough year. Been the same here, but on a smaller scale. The beuatiful BW pullet that I got from your hen & a Garner's roo was taken by a coon (well 1/2 of her was) last week, along with several other key players in my breeding programs.

Wishing everybody good luck this fall. Be wary- the critters here must know a rough winter is coming up and they are getting more bold every day.
