I weighed those two pullets pictured when they turned six months old; one was 4lbs 3oz, the other was 4lbs even, so I think we're getting the size right....4 1/2 pound for pullets right? I'm sure they'll gain some over the next couple of months before they turn a year old.

I've never had orpingtons, but from what I've read, they have great, friendly dispositions. So I guess they got that from them, too, because my lavenders follow me around like puppies. It's hard to take pictures of them because they're always right under me. A marked difference from my blacks.

The cockerel pictured with the two pullets weighed 4 lbs 12 oz when he turned 6 months old. The two cockerels in "A" pen (see pics earlier posts) weighed 4 lbs 15 oz and 5 lbs 3 oz at six months old. The 5 1/4 pounder was the one that escaped the fox, minus half his feathers. I am certain he would not have survived had he not been so big. I guess that ol' fox bit off more than he could chew, as they say.

That is who I am getting eggs from! Gorgeous birds, cannot wait. I just realized that I am going to have way too many eggs to bring back as it is so, umm, disregard my previous post. *blush*

How do you 'weigh' a chicken?? Is there a special chicken scale?

Yup! Works great; they don't fight it at all....sneak in when they are roosted at night with a flashlight and a DH helper and get them all done at one time with minimal stress. They go right back to bed.

I want to get a scale and weigh these eggs, too, because I am pretty sure they fall into the "large" category.
They are bigger than those laid by my Rhode Island Red and Australorp hens.​
