Ameraucana thread for posting pictures and discussing our birds

Quick question..
How is my roosters stance and build? I'm new to the breed and need some opinions. Also is he show worthy? I'm 16 and would like to show him if possible. He is young about 6 months maybe a little older
Thanks,
Tyler

Hi! I would really appreciate some advice from some experts out there............ Long story short but I ordered some blue americauna hatching eggs from a reputable breeder (not a hatchery), only one blue hatched so she hatched some for me and also had a poor hatch rate. What she ended up sending me was one blue, several blacks, all day olds and a month old splash pullet that she said was lovely and that if I ended up with a black roo, I could breed them and end up with blues. The splash pullet has no beard or muffs, I questioned the breeder and she said they should come in in time and that the black splash would become more apparent. The pullet is now about 3 1/2 months old and the black splash is more apparent on her body. She has also developed a lot of gold around her neck/face (had none until recently) and has no "facial fluff" as of yet. She does have dark grey/slate coloured legs. I am guessing she is an EE, not a splash americauna? If I breed her to a black americauna will I get the blue americaunas or will they all be EE's?

First, the "the muffs will come in time" saying is a lie. If your bird starts out and continues on without any visible muffs, it will never have any. It's a serious flaw of the breeder.

On that, so is the gold leakage.

However, the leg color is fine, and still counts the bird in as an Ameraucana. I just would NOT breed her though, as she's clean faced. . . And will continue to throw that in the offspring's children. Though you'll get 100% beard and muffs in her offpring, their own offspring will be a different story.

Thanks so much for the quick reply Illia. That was all as I had suspected.......... I am just a hobbyist, mostly for the eggs and the pretty birds. Will she throw 100% blue babies if bred back to a black? I really wanted the blues, not a splash or any blacks, I think they are beautiful. I know that the blues will not breed true.

Yep. Her and a black will give 100% blue.

Anyone know or have photos of the results on the show in Chehalis, WA? I have a feeling there were very few Ameraucanas this time. . . .

But, congrats Steve Waters on the Araucana.

He looks pretty nice to me! His color looks very uniform and nice, his hackles show hardly any signs of discoloration, that's good.

For a young boy he does look to be filling in nicely, body wise. Is he bantam or large fowl? What lines does he come from?

I'm going to mention this here since it is for a good cause. There is an auction site, bidbird, that is have in charity auctions for Give Kids The World, and there happens to be some Ameraucana chicks offered. I'm sure you all will recognize the person offering these chicks.

Actually thats not true. I have a clean faced Am. hen that I kept in my Am. pen since she laid such a beautiful egg. I hatched out some of her eggs, and some of the babies were also clean faced. She's now in the egg laying pen, along with her daughters.

This is because the cockerel/cock bird is not carrying two copies of the beard and muff gene.

Well after hatching W/BW for over two years and never getting a splash roo, we've gone and bought one from Peachick. Wahoo.
