Ameraucana thread for posting pictures and discussing our birds

Well, for example, if one is blue - A blue cockerel will develop dark color patches around the shoulders, neck, saddle, etc. Plus they're simply develop saddle feathers. (small, short, and triangular on the back)

The males will be quite green, iridescent, and also develop small hackles on the back (usually very pointed and shiny)

Some other things to look for are neck and tail base. A female will have feathers simply flow from neck to back, back to tail. A young male will have short feathers at the neck, then the feathering sort of "halts" at the joint of the neck and shoulders, then at the joint of the tail and back, is another halt. These are both because the hackle and saddle have not finished growing, and are what create that "smooth" outline/flow from one part of the body to the other.

With the head - Another thing is eyes. If a bird has a good spacing in front of the eyes, making it look mean or hawk-like, or a decent hooding of feathers over the eyes, or a lot of red around the eyes - It is quite likely a male. The two bottom ones are possessing these traits.

Okay, how about these two 10 week olds?:

What say ye, Ams fans? Do I get to keep them, or do I need to find new homes? If the feather leged one is a boy, I may try and keep him in hiding and breed him before I re-home him.

Wow! Except for the missing beard, the feather-legged one looks more like a faverolle every time we see pics. I'd hold onto her as a project bird- just not sure what project. I do like the other girl, even with a bit of black.

That feather legged one has got to be an olive egger. Thats exactly what I would expect them to look like. Ive got some that are just chicks, so you are the FORTUNATE one that got the very first one! And yes, both girls.

I bet the clean faced feather legged one is from my clean faced wheaten Am. that I have in my free range mob with my marans rooster. That would make sense, since her eggs were so blue, I probably got them mixed up and put her egg in the carton with the Ams.

Cool! The olive egger I already have that is almost ready to lay I swear looks like just a regular black Ameraucana. Her comb is a bit off, though. Now I'll have two - can't wait to see the eggs from all of them!

We lost a very loved member of our little farm yesterday, so today I went around " appreciatin' " everybody. Not that I don't normally, but when you have a loss it makes you want to hold the ones you still have even closer.

My blue roo that decided birchen would be more interesting:

This is what happens when I take the waterer to fill it and forget to bring it back for an hour. Ooops! Baby SW at 2:00 Jeremy!

2 of the lav pullets. I ask them every day" When are you going to make me some eggs?" And they just tilt their little heads and blink.
