Ameraucana thread for posting pictures and discussing our birds

I have a question. Some of my chicks that I got this week have pasty butts. Out of 10 wheaten chicks, about 5 of them have had pasty butts. I have been cleaning off their little bottoms. I lost one chick (the only lavender) soon after I got them. I lost one wheaten yesterday that had a pasty butt. I must have missed him when I was cleaning them off. I have noticed that it is ONLY the wheatens that are getting the pasty butts. All my blacks seem to be fine at this point.

Why would it be just the wheatens?
Is there something I should do different?
What's the best way to keep their little bottoms clean?

Any other advice would be GREATLY appreciated. I want to do the best I can with these little guys.

Thanks! That is my Basement Brothel. Its a tiny room in my unfinished basement that was used for who knows what before us. The walls are concrete and it does make for a cozy little cave to raise the chickies in. There's a little doorway into it and that keeps it nice and toasty warm, even with just one heat lamp. I block it off and they can fly out of their enclosure to roost on the edge. Its great for keeping the chicks out of the way and keeps the DH happy as well. He wouldn't let me have them in the living room.

They are outside in the big girl coop now. (Top pictures)

We had the same issue and noticed it primarily in the wheatens as well. They were shipped with silvers, buffs and some black and it was mostly wheatens that were affected and we ended up losing quite a few so I'll be interested to see what others have to say.

Do y'all know of a reputable ameraucana breeder in California? I had someone email my website wanting to buy two ameraucana chicks. As I am in TN I don't think they would survive the trip. Can anyone over that way help him out? I think he is a kid based on what he said. He says color doesn't matter.

I personally think they are a bit more fragile than the other varieties.

You do realize Easter Eggers and Ameraucanas are two completely different types of chicken, right? There's an EE thread out there too.

Your girls are pretty, but they're not Ameraucanas. Though hatcheries like to convince their buyers that they're the same, Ameraucanas are a true, purebred breed that don't even come in a brown/black color like that, whereas Easter Eggers are a sort of "mutt" who come in almost any color and often lay green eggs.
