Ameraucana thread for posting pictures and discussing our birds

Well I have three of what should be 3 Ameraucana chicks from TSC. After how beautiful my EEs turned out(one is a rooster that I think is pretty close to being a full blood ameracauna) , I really wanted some purebreds. So far all three are doing great, took me awhile to figure out names. Came up with Cheetah, Latte, and Chloe. So far judging by the feathers already coming in they are going to be gorgeous so far. will try to get photos of them by end of the week.

As for my roo, he is a bit slow but very, very colorful. Only problem with him is his beak is a bit messed up and curved, giving him a Hawk-like appearance, aka Hawk. My female (after finally finding a green egg in our coop found that part out)aka Playgirl has almost a leopard print on her feathers but no beard. Both have the most silky feeling feathers I have ever touched, and we have a BO roo. And there is still no end to the colors I am finding on my roo Hawk. I am very pleased with this breed so far, wouldn't mind a bit bigger eggs but all their beauty makes up for it.

Only question I have is that TSC said the chicks were pullets, is there really a way to tell that with the Ameraucanas? Or should I not get my hopes up just yet?

I'm pretty sure TSC only sells EE's.

And all big hatcheries sex their chicks, which means you order all pullets and get about 90% females.

Well my first two are mutts obviously, but I am pretty sure I was told they are full Ameracaunas at the KS TSC but Idk yet. I guess more or less their telltale characteristics will show as they get older... and hopefully mine aren't part of the 10% of roosters. Wish they would keep the coloring they have now as they get older... love the markings on all three

I LOVE the coop! They're so cute- "Mom! We can't reach the perches!"
FYI- when they get bigger you're not going to want to have the hay in there

Shavings are so much less stinky and easier to shovel

I'm realy sorry to tell you, tsc and all those type of stores don't sell pure ameraucanas, they sell easter eggers, ee's are lovely birds, I have some of my own and like them almost as much as my pure bred birds, here is some advise, find some on this forum that lives close to you and has the color you want and cut a deal with them, but do expect to pay more for good quality pure birds. Another bit of advise, read everything you can about the breed before you purchase birds, and keep those
easter eggers, they are great to have around

I love my 2 ee they are my best laying, I bought eggs I knew were ee. the other day I bought chicks the feed store tried to tell me were ameraucana, I told the guy I doubted they were pure but I couldn't resist no point arguing the point but if I get a roo its going back

Okay I need advise. I have a Cinnamon Queen hen sitting on Ameraucana eggs and Guinea eggs (earlier post). I know that they hatch at 21 days and 28 days. Should I leave the chicken eggs with the hen and take the guinea eggs out and finish them in the incubator or take the chicken eggs out and leave the guinea eggs under her.....what are your opinions and why

My thought is it would be better to take the guinea eggs out as they are so hard to raise and if they get wet (dew) it will kill them.
Anybody use to hatching guineas??

I'd steal the guinea eggs. mine as chicks seem to get picked off pretty easily. but if you have any not hatching, don't help them out. that has been my worst mistake. everyone I helped, could not stand, I think they really need that pushing with the feet to get the shell off to help them stand.
