Ameraucana thread for posting pictures and discussing our birds

Faverolles. But pardon my harsh saying, but it would just be outright dumb to breed Favs to Ameraucanas to get Wheaten. Otherwise, no other breed in the US.

It would be dumb and I can't imagine Meredith doing that. He's bred Ameraucanas for how many years now, at least 40?

I'm stumped. Honestly, I may not use any of these chicks for breeding at all. I've ran into several issues with them so far (mostly failure to thrive) and it disappoints me so much, I was looking forward so much to these little guys...

That's what I'm wondering too Cyn.

If you needed an outcross there are other W/BW Ameraucana lines, you could even cross in Buffs if you had to.

ETA: Now that you mentioned Favs, I'm going to pay close attention to thru combs Illia, thanks.

Using Buffs for W/BW - BAD idea.

Using W/BW for Buffs - Good idea.

Buffs carry a lot that will be hard to pull out in the future.

For Wheaties, it doesn't hurt to throw in some normal Blue or Black, just as long as you cull all the bad stuff out down the road to get back to Wheaten. But, yeah, there's lots of Wheaten lines out there especially, and some BW too, but honestly most BW lines are pretty related to each other.

Not something I plan on doing, I was speaking as if you were extremely desperate for an outcross. Which, for your other reasons mentioned, crossing to BBS etc most people aren't.

Buff x Wheaten is bad for getting back to wheaten or both ways? I was told for my buff projects that if I needed to cross them with wheaten. My old buff rooster before he unexpectedly died was 1/4 wheaten.

I have little clue, I just find that Wheatens are an older color, and they breed true, and before the big "BW's have bluer eggs" craze, there were, and may still be, more breeders of Wheatens around. I may be wrong, I'm just figuring it to be so. Most BW's I see out there these days originate to Pips&peeps, Peachick (Pips lines) Wayne (I believe still the same lines?) and Blehm (again, often related, someone current me if I'm wrong) I figure, especially with Wheatens breeding true, that most people are out there using them for show and the sort.
