Ameraucana thread for posting pictures and discussing our birds

Hi,
What do you mean by "tanK"?

My brooders are old "stock tanks" that have holes in the bottom and no longer hold water. They make pretty good brooders. I have welded wire lids that I have made for them so barn cats and varmints can't get in to the chicks, and the chicks can't fly out.

No wonder the chicks go nuts, they probably think they are going to be served up for dinner. If possible raise the tank up so when you approach them your not so big and handle them as much as possible.

Just a general question about roosters.
My Ameraucana roo has really long spurs....well did, I just trimmed them off. Can the spurs being to long interfere with the breeding of the hens and cause fertility to be low or could they just rough up the backs of the hens?

I have my Blues, Blacks, and Splashes all together in a clear plastic brooder, up on a table. My Blacks are MUCH calmer than either the Blues or the Splashes. I have been hand feeding hard boiled egg so they are all excited to see me now but when there is chaos in the brooder, it is always the Blues and the Splashes. (My EEs are in a brooder next to them. They are COMPLETELY insane. The BCMs are calm by comparison to any of the birds with muffs!)

I found out by accident last year that when I took a bunch of spastic chicks and put them in a face-level brooder they instantly became my friends. They started jumping on my arms when I went to feed them the very first day. I wish I had a small enough bunch of chicks to do that again- but that would mean less chicks!

I had always heard that silvers are wilder than other colors so had been a little reluctant to get them, but have five 8 week old silvers (2 cockerels,3pullets) from a breeder up here that are easy to handle and not panicky. I agree about the EE's I have had, nuts until they grow up.
