Ameraucana thread for posting pictures and discussing our birds

I saw another "Ameraucana" for sale there, thought just a second about buying him, but already have too many and didn't want one to quarantine either. He was a very beautiful crele colored, yellow [not willow] shanked rooster with 3" spurs. He had a sparce beard and muffs, but tight pea comb, and was missing an eye. The seller yelled at me "That's an Ameraucana in that cage." I just replied "He's beautiful, but got some age on him." The seller agreed, "We kept him a long time because he's the best looking Ameraucana we ever had."

I've just about given up trying to be diplomatic about expaining to people the differences between ameraucanas, araucanas and EE. People get downright hostile, even if you are very polite about it!

I had a guy buy some of my ameraucanas recently. He was excited and thrilled about them, but I was leary. I know you can't control what someone does with your birds once you sell them. At that point it is out of your hands. The thing that made me cringe about the situation was that he kept calling them "Air Cannas." You know, like the stuff you breath and the big, leafy flower. "I got me some Air cannas at a swap meet."

He kept saying like that, in spite of the fact that I pronounced it correctly for him a number of times.

In post #11712 there is a rooster in the background. Look at his comb. I had a black ameraucana from a reputable breeder with a comb just like that. I named the rooster "Donald" after Donald Trump. Someone suggested that the comb looked like a bad comb-over, such as Donald Tump presents. The name stuck. The rooster has been rehomed to a layer flock. I am wondering if this is a common flaw that happens with ameraucanas or what?

I know, off topic, but I have noticed the same thing!! I'm so glad someone else has too.

I have yet to receive my first Ameraucana eggs (and Marans, for that matter) but as soon as I do, I'll let you know what I find.

Yes, the parents were different colors, the parents of the male: mother birchen almost and the father was solid black, he was their only chick left & the parents of the hen were, well the mother was wheaten while the dad was a light grey.

They can grow into it, right?

I can shed some light on that

That is Bacchus, my never shuts up blue barred Olive Egger roo. He's from Patty Carson's stock. The hen he came out of carries a blue gene, and out of the hatches I had, probably ~25 chicks total, I got 4 blues: this guy, 2 muffed blue barred pullets, and 1 solid blue pullet, plus a lovely flock (after selling a few) of muffed barred 4 cockerels and 8 pullets.. But this guy's comb is the funkiest thing I have ever seen.

There's no Birchen Ameraucanas, the Wheaten, did it look exactly like the Wheatens you've seen on this thread? Were their legs green or blue? And "light gray" - Doesn't sound like Ameraucanas to me, sorry. Crossing a bunch of unknown colors is what people do with Easter Eggers.

Sorry, the guy misled you. They're still beautiful, but in no way Ameraucanas.

Whittni, I too have been taken and misled, I thought I had the color thing down .. but nope still got 3 EE's and one ameraucana, of the 4 she told me were true. I looked at their feet. for color and all, right colored feet.. right comb.. then went to the ameraucana association home website where they have pics.. and nope they were EE's and roos on top of that. Its such a learning experience when your looking for a breed that has such a close "cousin" Just remember there really are not many color variations to Ameracauna's if they have multiple colors on them chances are not true ameraucana's, if they have mixed colors probably not, if there is red in their wings.. it's a roo.. go to the web site and really study the colors that are allowed.. Good luck Whittni, at least you'll have pretty yummy eggs.. just keep looking and maybe even print out pics of the allowed colors and patterns and take them with you to the breeders place and match them to the pics and standards. that way youll be happy and know you haven't been misled.
