I have my blue Ameraucana that is ready to start laying any moment now, or later, but if I miss going out there and finding that egg, I'm going to be so disappointed after waiting all this time.

Oh, I don't wanna scare you any more than you already are. I had a fusion last Jan. c5 , c6 and it hurts worse now than it did before. It failed to fuse and I spend most of my time going to Dr appts and trying to find some relief. I know many people have good luck with the surgery, I was just one of those that didn't.

One thing I do know, once it's done you can't undo it so make sure you've exhausted all other possibilites first. JMO.
And to keep this related to the thread..I've had to rely on hubby, family and friends to help out with all the animals and had to make some difficult decision's on what to cut back on. Have your DH set things up so it's as easy as possible for you to do when you're able cause if you're anything like me he won't be able to take care of them right! LOL!!

This may sound silly, but I think I'm more worried about just that last part there..that my hubby won't take care of them like I like.

sorry to hear that yours didn't work out well..did they check you for Brachial Plexitis? A nerve test should tell. I have that also, but it should take care of itself in time...a long time.

But if your fusion didn't take...all I can say is... EEEK! And sooo sorry!
At least I will still have my girls when I am done with this... I hope! No, I know that he will be doing his best, because he knows how much I care for them. I will be dreaming about my chickens as I come out of the anesthetic.

And again, I hope I don't miss out on a pretty colored egg, but if I come home to a new one in an egg carton, I will know which one laid it! MY Blue!

I have never seen a visibly sick bird at any of the shows I attended. The closest thing I saw was a white call duck that looked "dried out". I assumed it was just terribly stressed out. It was one of my BW cockerels and I know it was just fine when I caught it, washed it, and put it in the cage at the show barn. They turned the lights off that night so all I can think of is that it may have freaked out and poked its eye somehow. Nonetheless, the folks at the show weren't taking any chances and pulled the bird. I don't blame them. Besides, it wouldn't have done well anyways.

I hesitate to mention this next thing because I don't want folks to get the wrong idea so but I did contract a case of the mites from some birds I brought home from a show. Up until that point I had never had a mite or a lice on my place. In fact, I lost a bird because of the mites because I didn't even think about the cause being mites. It wasn't until a second bird started showing the same symptoms (sort of a wet feather look) that I decided to give it a nice warm bath, some anitbiotics, and quarantine it and I noticed during the bath that I had tons of mites all over my hands and arms. Initially it was isolated to just the Buckeyes I had in one pen but it spread throughout my yard and I had an absolutely terrible time finally getting rid of them. So now I wash the birds in Zodiak flea & tick shampoo before the show, check them good once I get home & before putting them in their pens, and I spray them down good with a Permethrin solution. I do NOT want to go thru that again.

However, having said that, I would and do encourage folks to get into showing their birds. I honestly do believe seeing a sick bird at a show is a very real rarity. If it's not, then the folks putting on that show should be chastised and replaced. Especially if it is happening routinely. It simply should not be happening. All the folks I know are serious about their birds' health and that just naturally transfers over to others' birds as well. I'm also confident that the judges would take action if they saw a sick bird. Now if a bird has 1 or 2 mites on it, well, nobody can really blame anyone for not catching that. And it doesn't take long for 1-2 mites to turn into 100. Besides that, if you allow your birds to free range, they can pick up mites anytime as they might be brought in from sparrows or what-have-you.

So I do encourage folks to show. It's a main staple if not the backbone for our hobby. Don't let someone's bad experience overshadow all the good that is done at the shows or keep you from experiencing a wonderful time of fellowshipping with other fanciers, seeing some really great birds, and just overall having a really great time!

I think I read somewhere that there is like 148 genes in a chicken and that's more than any other animal. Isn't it amazing that everything needed to create all the different breeds and varieties we have or will have were contained in just two birds. But then again, for those of us who breed, it's not so amazing sometimes. I am still perplexed by how I wound up with what I call "Calico" this year. Out of over 150 WBS chicks hatched, I got one little Wheaten pullet that is dark with big black splotches all over her.

I got my first ameraucana egg yesterday!

It's pullet sized, and a little greener than I would like, but hey, it's still an egg. Wish I knew which one layed it!
