Ameraucana thread for posting pictures and discussing our birds

I just gave my last Silver Roo away (he's headed to freezer camp

How did the Silver's grow out that you got from me? The last batch of LF showed weird feather patterns and all stayed on the small side. I didn't want to pursue raising and breeding them...they are my least fav Ameraucana.

Silver x Blue = All blue and black birds, males will have silver leakage that mimics Birchen.

Cross those back to a Silver, or cross the F1's together and you get 25-50% Silvers, half of them will be blue.

Silver is simply e+/e+ on the same locus as Blues/Blacks which are E/E. That's the only difference. Aside of course from blue.

ETA - Personally I say go with F1 x F1 because Silvers need help, especially in size. Crossing back to Silver doesn't help much, but choosing the best of the Blue-Silvers from F1 x F1 really helps.

I'm still missing a good dark olive, and perhaps a good golden-green or a really dark olive verging on dark red. I don't have any F2 or F3 Olive Eggers yet because I'm picky and waiting for the right parents to hatch.

I'm impressed!! I'm still working on a good blue egg which hopefully will be solved following Crossroads at the end of the month. Assuming those eggs hatch for me (after travelling completely across the country and beyond) - then next year, cross those with my Marans - who still aren't laying - and then maybe, some nice dark green eggs?? A girl can dream, eh! Your avatar provides me with inspiration.

Question re the brown red ameraucana - why are there so few breeders? Is it just not a popular color, difficult to work with, needs way to much work...? I've been bit hard by the chicken bug. I have a little rainbow flock right now, but I'm thinking about getting some birds to work with seriously, and can't decide between the brown red ameraucana and araucanas (color(s) TBD). One big problem I have noted if I want the ameraucanas is just getting my hands on some.

I have a Brown-Red rooster, and I'm having trouble finding a mate of the same color. Right now his harem is a Black Ameraucana pullet and a porcelain Silkie-X-Ameraucana hen. I've hatched several of the eggs from the Silkie X and they are all sturdy, good looking chicks... But they're not Ameraucanas!!! I am waiting for the Black pullet to lay and she is just not cooperating.

Did you try the Ameraucana Breeder's List? I know Mike Gilbert breeds brown-red in LF. I can't speak for anyone else, but for me, the brown red variety of Ameraucana didn't wow me like most of the others did.

I think it would be a wonderful asset to the ABC to have more people focusing on the continuation of the brown-red ams. I wish you success in your pursuit.
