What?

You think 50 eggs a week, per hen, is setting the bar too high? I have almost $100 invested in just purchasing these 5 birds. And they are not cooperating. I think they owe me for the mental anguish and physical labor of caring for them. IF I get eggs to hatch and they are all lavs I might be able to forgive them, but until then I am holding their initial cost and upkeep over their heads. And I still have a black roo that has to go. 3 roos, 2 hens? Not a good ratio AT ALL.

$100 is nothing! I spent $96 on a batch of eggs to have only one chick hatch, which the cat ate!

$20 each bird isn't bad...really. You have yourself an almost mature flock that you can eventually breed. I say you are ahead of the game.

It's definitely been the year of the boy, in some of my last hatches I've had;

8 boys 6 girls
7 boys 4 girls
3 boys 1 girl
9 boys 3 girls

Just the way the dice rolls I guess!

I would have been so happy to get all my chickens for 20$ each. Be happy and hope for the best. Most people sell culls for 20.

Have I meantioned I work in a low paying job and that $100 represents over 10 hours of work? I don't make $96 a DAY so spending that much on one batch of eggs is out of my league.

So far I have been very lucky with hatches. *knock, knock on wood* The eggs I have set right now are mystery eggs. I don't even know if they are fertile, but they are home grown, so no money has been spent, if they don't hatch.

Someone commented that they would be glad to get their chickens for $20 each. I think they missed the part where I got all these as CHICKS...some only 1 week old....so I don't feel like I got a bargin....I got what I paid for, assuming they EVER lay. I have been feeding them, waterering them and cleaning up after them for 6 months so far...oh, and I have over $50 in medication cuz they were not overly healthy when I got them.

I feel your frustration, Cass. I started my flock piecemeal as well. Split an order of chicks here, get some eggs there.....Cull, cull, cull. Roo, roo, roo....In the end I am sure it cost me more than $20 per chick. But its like having bad credit- you pay more and it takes longer to get to where you want to be. IF I could turn back the clock.........
