Ameraucana thread for posting pictures and discussing our birds

Do tell more about this slow feather thing.... Mine that are growing out are 3-4weeks and I see three that still have most of the down and no tail feathers. Should I mark those to cull to the EE pen?

Just an update on how these BW boys are turning out. My silver hen has an affection with these boys beards. Overall I think they are REALLY nice looking.

Wow!!!!!

Tail appears pinched/compact but it is hard to say, plus his pose is either hard to judge at least for me, or, he's too upright in carriage. How are his wings, normally? They're carried weird in the photo.

The one in back looks really nice from that tiny bit I see, but, I'm not the best judge anyway. From what I see, it's his tail that irks me. The rest seems pretty nice.

His saddle and his tail look pinched to me. He has good pattern, but that is secondary. I would also question his size with the pinch I am seeing in the back end. How much does he weigh?

Off topic question but I have one of my Silver Amer. roos in with some Leghorn hens. We hatched some of the eggs and I thought I would be making some EEs. All of the chicks came out with a straight comb

I thought that I had read that the Pea comb was dominant? They had not been seperated for very long before collecting but I thought I would get aleast one with a pea comb. Am I just unlucky or am I missing something?

I had the same problem with my lavender crosses. I think that when you are using a less-developed variety the pea comb may not be completely dominant. I got about 50/50 in my f1s, and about 75% pea in the f2s. You might still get blue eggs from single combed crosses though- HBeuhler has made lots of them using leghorns.

I have several single combed blue egg layers that I bought from a hatchery (I don't have ANY idea on their background). Don't give up on them yet!!!

Could I have some advice from you wise Ameraucana people?

I have a Blue Ameraucana cockerel, and a Black split to Blue pullet. I also have two Black split to Lavender pullets. A breeding pen has opened up, and I wondered if it would be sacrilege to put the two Lavender split pullets in with that cockerel. I mostly do Wyandottes, so I don't intend to sell or show these birds, but I would like a few more blue egg layers for my rainbow layer flock, and maybe to pass one or two along to my father-in-law. Is mixing the colors like that a bad idea, with what I want to do with them?

I do have a Wheaten Marans pullet in with him for some more Olive Eggers, and I may later put a couple of my Blue Andalusians in too, for some blue easter eggers.
