Ameraucana thread for posting pictures and discussing our birds

Jean asked that Ideal stop using the Ameraucana name on their Easter Eggers in the second post of the thread that is linked above. A phone number is posted on the thread, maybe calls made to that number could let them know that many Ameraucana breeders would like to see a little more truth in advertising when it comes to the lineage of their "Ameraucanas".

Thank you, guys! I'm betting the folks here will jump right on this. Let's educate the masses ....

I'm not an Ameraucana breeder, but I am interested in everyone being truthful about the stock that they sell. That includes the hatcheries. My very first laying hens were ordered through our local elevator from a hatchery (it was not Ideal). I signed up for four sexed pullets. I told them I didn't care what kind, I wanted them for personal egg layers for our family of three. They asked me if "Ameraucanas" were okay and I said yes. I got my chicks and saw an article in the Backyard Poultry magazine about Ameraucanas. Imagine my surprise when my first egg was olive green. I didn't care that my hens were Easter Eggers, I just wanted eggs to eat, but I was annoyed that what I thought I was getting wasn't truly represented. I will be contacting Ideal with my story and asking them to properly label their stock. People aren't going to stop buying them because they call them what they really are, great layers of colored eggs, they might even sell more by advertising them as such. Thanks for calling our attention to the thread Jean, I never would have seen it if you had not posted it here.

No- I have a disclaimer on our farm site that we are NOT a hatchery, and it would be an incredible burden for us to grow out all those roosters. That's one reason why its so difficult ot get started in this breed, but I think its worth the trouble. Not every roo is good enough to want to use, as a "pure" breeder anyway. I still give them away to people that just want to make EEs or OEs with their hatchery girls.
I got all excited when I got a message last year- somebody wanting 100 marans chicks. Then I got to the end of the message

I don't hae a website posted on the club page but will link it and add that disclaimer. Great idea! 100 marans chicks... LOL

How much do you guys sell pure bred LAYING hens for? With the expense of getting to that age I'm thinking it would be quite a bit.

My possible chocolate ameracauna projects are pipping!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Has anyone else from the Ameraucana Breeders club gotten cold calls from "Chickens" magazine about advertising their Lavenders? I got a strange message on my answering machine a couple days ago. They said "lavenders", not lavender Ameraucanas.

They left me a message saying they wanted to talk to me about advertising, but they weren't specific.

What does everyone think about my cockerel? He's almost 8 months old. We hope to start breeding some chicks for local sale this spring and want to make sure we are selling good stock.

He's as good as most Blue Wheatens I see around but I'll be honest with you, he's not great. He's still very pretty though. He's got a lot of white fluff at the base of the tail which you really want a minimal amount of, though, that seems to be pretty darn rare from what I've seen online lately, and his tail appears pretty big, it should ideally be a tad smaller. Beard/muffs need more volume and less white coloration in them. Hackle needs less blue/black in it. Stuff like that. I'm assuming he is standing on one leg, making his posture a little more horizontal than asked for, but, again, he's standing on one leg and purposefully leaning in to get balance.

So like said, he's a very handsome fella, about average for most BW's I've seen out there, not great, but not bad either.
