Ameraucana thread for posting pictures and discussing our birds

You need to go to the Ameraucana Club site. John Blehm put a lot of effort in showing the down color of the black chicks. That should explain what E/E chick should look like on a black, lavender will be similar but lavender coloring instead of black coloring.

Thanks Harry. I think it was there I saw Cindy talking about the white bellies. I only go there once a week ro so because it moves too slow. I try not to come here too much either- it raises my blood pressure. I am feeling wonderful since I banned myself from the BST and I don't have to see the travesty.

Are E/E (split) chicks the ones that show white bellies when they hatch? I thought Crystalcreek was trying to breed those out, but I don't understand what that's all about.

Another way of looking at E/E (Extended black) is 'self black' because any other genes that may or may not be present (like lacing, sheen, pattern) will not penetrate. Cuckoo and Mottled are exceptions so those can be based on the E/E black but not much else is including solid black birds in many breeds.

HappyMtn,
At this stage you probably won't have many chicks that meet that criteria since I was keeping all the ones that had yellow bellies for my foundation stock now I have to go the opposite direction. I had lavender Orpingtons that were born pure white and they are not mottled or any other color except they grew to be a sterling colored lavender which I prefer from the dark grey lavender shade. I believe they may show up as a very dark grey if they are pure E/E but I did not do any research to dispute it either way. You will have to talk to Crystal Creek and Dak plus otheres that have lavenders to come up with some direction you should follow. Henk69 on here is someone that has a vast knowledge of Lavenders and you should PM your questions and concerns and possibly share with us on the ABC stie. Henk69 is the fellow that created the Chicken Calculator that everyone is using.

how can you tell if they are ameraucana's or EE's

thanks

I believe this is a valid question. I'd like to know the answer to this question too.
Aren't we all here to help educate each other?

Well I hope I haven't been doing it all wrong- this is my third season with them and first I heard about culling for down color. I've just been breeding back and forth to splits and blacks working on type. I am already done hatching(lavs) for the season because I have my daughter's surgery and recovery taking up the rest of the spring and summer.
