Got back from the show last night....

My black bantam cockerel won Best AOCCL in both shows and my white pullet won Best AOSB in Show 1 and my blue cock bird won Best AOSB and Champion LF Show 2.

Grace and I both won Champion Ameraucana, Reserve Champion Ameraucana and Champion Junior Ameraucana since it was a meet.
Congratulations!

Question for all color experts:

Is it possible for two Lavenders to produse any other color of chick besides a lavender?

I know that lavender and black is suppose to produce black and black splits.

Thing is I had a pair of Lavenders (I know that they aren't actually standardized yet), the hen lays a funky shaped egg so I know what her eggs look like (the rooster is now decessed). Most are misshaped and not good for hatching, but I've managed to get one to hatch, but I cannot find a lavender chick in the whole bunch. I have a buff looking something that hatched and funny thing is there was nothing set to hatch that should have produced buff at all except for Naked Necks.

It is quite possible for lavenders to produce other colours because Lav is recessive and requires 2 copies to express. In order to get a bird that appears lavender, it has to be carrying two copies of the Lav gene (Lav/Lav) and the only way for that to happen is to use either a bird split for lavender (known to be carrying one copy of Lav) or lavender birds (Lav/Lav). It is quite possible the one chick that hatched is carrying a copy of the Lav gene (split) but the only way to know that is to breed it with another known Lav carrier and see if you can produce a lavender.

Maybe I am missing something....I thought lav x lav = lav? This is why black should be the only color used because some can't distinguish blue from lav. One of the parents has to not be pure lav but maybe blue split to lav? It is my understanding that two lavender parents produce 100% lavender offspring...
So no, if both parents are visually lavender then it is only possible to have lavender offspring...no other color

I do know that when my Lavender rooster was bred to Dark Cornish hens that he produced mostly black chicks but a few dark colored chipmunk ones. Does this mean that he was not pure for the lavender gene?

This is what I thought.

If you cross Lav/Lav x Lav/Lav, you should get all lavender. If that doesn't happen then somebody wasn't Lav/Lav.

Lav/Lav crossed with something not carrying a copy of lavender will be a total crap shoot so you likely won't learn much there - except that those off-spring will all be carrying a copy of Lav so if you breed them back to something with Lav, you could end up with more lavenders.

Pullets were 25 weeks old on Sunday. Got my first blue pullet egg from pips&peeps Blue Ameraucana this afternoon. I couldn't be more pleased!!!! (Also showing off a swanky dark BCM pullet egg above it .... )

DEFINITELY having fun with eggs around here these days!!

We got our spring chicks on Sunday.

I think this little cute one that kinda looks like an owl is an Ameraucana. We ordered 12 of them. It's a new breed for us this year!

I honestly can't think of anything else in this world that is as cute an Ameraucana chick.
