Ameraucana thread for posting pictures and discussing our birds

I have two wheaton Ameraucana chicks, one slightly older than the other. Up til recently, I thought both were pullets, but now I'm not so sure. The younger of the two has a much more pronounced comb than the older one, but the coloring would lead me to believe it is a pullet, too. So, I come to the experts for some assistance.

Both pullets together. The younger one on the left and the older one on the right:

The older one (for comparison purposes):

The one in question:

The two of them again from above (younger at top, older at bottom):

So, do I have two pullets or a pullet and a roo? Are they both wheaton or blue wheaton? TIA
Rest assured BOTH are pullets. The previous poster is right. The suspect is an EE. If they came from the same place I would worry both might be.

Thanks, I was kind of afraid of that. They came from different places, and I'm not concerned about the older of the two. The older one is about 2.5 months and the younger one was probably 3-4 weeks when I bought her a few weeks ago - so maybe just under 2 months?

Oh well, she will be a lovely EE who will go into the general population instead of the Ameraucana breeding pen. I seem to be having such a hard time starting an Ameraucana breeding pen! I lost my beautiful little blue wheaton cockerel earlier this week, so now my only roo is the one I have in my general population. Guess it will soon be time to start moving birds around again.

The one on the left is a rooster and the one on the right is a pullet.
Oh dear. LOL - your opinion seems to be outnumbered here, but I'm glad you posted. :) Have you seen a young wheaton Ameraucana roo this color at this age before? The little blue wheaton roo I lost this past week was already coloring in and was very dark (see pic below), so I was expecting this one to either color out like the older pullet or darken like the roo - but she/he doesn't match either one!

I might just have to wait to see if she/he lays an egg or crows - whichever comes first. :)

My little blue wheaton roo that I lost. He is about 4-5 wks old here, I think. He was such a sweetie! :

samouw,

I agree that it looks like you have a pullet and a cockerel. It does appear that the cockerel is carrying buff since. I once got a batch of eggs that turned out looking like that. I ended up getting rid of all of them but one and she is my daughters pet ee, I think she is around 6-7 years old now and has been laying every other day for the past month.

All the cockerels in the above forementioned batch looked like your bird, the pullets were closer to being wheaten in color, but were slightly off.

In order to determine what color your pullet is, you need to get better pictures of her tail or you could just pick her up and pull out her wing. There will be a patch of dark color on the outer side of her wing that will be exposed if you open it up. It will either be blue or black.

Hey don't be sorry we are here to help identify too. EE are great chickens especially for the egg basket. I have and egg flock, that's where I put all the friendly hens that I don't want to get rid of, but can't use for breeding :) I hope nobody gave you a hard time.
