Ameraucana thread for posting pictures and discussing our birds

I have my first Blue wheaten ameraucana, and I'm wondering if someone can tell me what is going on with these spots on her legs (i.e. is this normal?).  It is the only chick that hatched, so I have nothing to compare to.

She has black spots on her legs, like an Ancona.  This side of her beak is yellow, but the other side has black.

I'm hoping this is just some kind of off-coloring that happens occasionally, not some strange fungus or something.  She is 8 weeks old now, but 7 weeks in the photo.
I appreciate any feedback.  I don't recall seeing these spots on other people's photos of Ameraucanas.

I will take a guess at explaining what may have caused this.Spotting of slate legs is seen in the presence of mottling, barring and pied.No signs of mottling and barring are seen.Pied can look like splash. There are 2 kinds of pied.Recessive as in the exchanger leghorn pattern and dominate as in erminett. Not to be confused with ermine which resembles the columbian pattern.Based on this I would say this bird is blue with erminett gene. You only need 1 copy of a dominate gene to see the effect. It could also be splash with erminett.Only other guess is a mutation.I have found the erminett gene in some araucana.

Thank you for the information. I'm going to be interested to see what color egg this pullet lays, and what she looks like as an adult. She is a sweet and pretty bird, despite the fact that she is not what I originally thought!

I bought these birds from a local egg seller. She calls them Ameraucana. I bought them because I needed layers, so not for the breed. However, now I'm curious. Are they really Ameraucanas? She sold them because they were getting terribly beat up by her three huge roos. They are missing huge patches of feathers all over their backs, necks, and shoulders. Really, they are about the ugliest birds I've ever seen actually. But after a moult, they may look a lot better. So what do you think? Ameraucana or EEs? The eggs are green to blue-green. Thanks for your input.

It could just be the lighting in those pics, but the legs look greenish, which would make them easter eggers. The color also isn't quite right for ether buff or wheaten, the only two ameraucana colors that would look similar to that, so again probably easter eggers. I'll bet they look tons better once they molt.

I have a question that maybe you all can answer. I know that in wyandottes, even a pure bird can occasionally have a straight comb. That's not what the breed calls for, so it'd be an automatic DQ, but it is still considered a purebred bird. Do you know if that happens in Ameraucanas?

I hatched some lavender ameraucanas about two months ago. I was warned when I got the eggs that the babies may be mutts because she put the ameraucana rooster in with the hens about 12 days prior to the eggs I got for hatching. Two seem like typical lav ameraucanas, but the third has a straight comb. I don't see other signs of it being a mixed breed, so I'm curious if it just threw a straight comb, or if they're EE where the lav ameraucana genes were strongly dominant. I hadn't planned to show them or anything, but I'm a bit curious.

I have a question about blue/black Ameraucana's. I purchased some chicks this spring and parents appeared to have beards and full muffs. The birds are March models and still have not feathered out the beard/muffs. My Wheatens are already starting and they are much younger. Will these blue/black Ameraucanas possibly beardless when grown? I HOPE at least the eggs are BLUE. I did not purchase these birds for breeding just eggs so I hope I am not disappointed.

I will breed my Wheatens/Blue Wheaten birds. They are so beautiful "inside and out" Peachick Ameraucana's are so NICE!
I'd love to know this too. I have three Ameraucanas [6-8 wks old]. Two blue and one splash. The lighter blue is getting her muff and beard feathers and is gorgeous. The other two are younger and still have fuzz on their cheeks [gorgeous tho too!]. The splash's muff fuzz sticks out quite a bit but the other darker blue's muff fuzz doesn't really stick out much [yet?].

Is there anyway to tell the amount of beards and muffs in young chicks?

W/BWA chicks are the cutest chicks! Here are some that hatched within the last few days. I just love the soft yellow color and their puffy cheeks.
