Ameraucana thread for posting pictures and discussing our birds

I am 100% for the breed standard after all without it how would we know what our goals were. But I all ways thought the point of breeding to a standard was about community and helpfulness. not to shoot people down and ridicule. Case in point, I had a question about the coloration of my chick, instead of it being answered respectfully, if at all, the argument that has all ready been argued to the point of ridiculousness was argued some more. Really? I thought this forum was to learn and get advice not argue!

I HAVE to ask -- what's the point of having a breed standard if no one is interested in learning it, let alone following it?

Easter Eggers and Olive Eggers have no standard .....

<sigh>

It's just as frustrating for me as it is for you.

And i understand that but when the folks that are supposed to know about it shoot someone like me down that is new to the breed just for saying that their eggs are supposed to be blue which i seriously thought i felt horrible! Instead of kindly correcting what i said ya know. I am all for breed standard as my kids are going to be showing etc... but i would hate to go to a show and deal with snobs which is why i never got into showing horses because i don't deal well with that. If someone makes a mistake like i did you don't write something like this.

Please don't tell people that. Egg color alone is NOT what makes them EEs, or any bird for that matter.

See i may have been mistaken it what i said but there are better ways to say things to others. Also i posted about a blue roo that i have which was totally ignored. The only person on this forum that has been kind to me regarding Ameraucana's is dak. I have loved the EE and OE tread and even though they have no standard per say they enjoy the birds and have fun with it. Maybe instead of breeding true lavender ameraucana's i should breed lavender EE or OE and just have my kids show them in 4-h for FUN! People need to remember you can be passionate about something and that's fine but don't snip at the new comers trying to get a clue cause in the end it's the breed that suffers when people don't want to get involved with it.

It is very hard to interpret tone of voice or attitudes online. Easy to misunderstand things. I did not see anyone doing any ridiculing. I am so sorry if you took something that way. I am sure it was not intended. What you saw was a discussion about egg color that got very technical. I don't think much of it was even directed at you at all. YOu just happened to post in the middle of it.

Calm discussion is not arguing..it is people working out questions or problems and that is healthy. Often times we learn a lot from these kind of discussions. I personally find them a welcome change from the constant

....kind of conversations. I mean I know people have to start somewhere and would never learn if they didn't post so of course that kind of posting is necessary but it can get boring year after year. Nice to have a meaty discussion once in awhile.

I am so sorry if your feelings were hurt. Please continue to post and learn about Ameraucanas.

I posted about this little guy when he was younger and got differing responses. Now that he is older, perhaps I can beg the experts opinion again.
I picked him out of an assortment of chicks (from a breeder that I trust) and we thought he was a she (he was a very yellow little chick) and was a wheaten Ameraucana. Imagine my surprise when he started growing this comb and that tail! But he is definitely not a wheaten Ameraucana, nor does he look exactly like the buffs are supposed to look (I don't think anyway - never having had a buff). So - here he is at about 5-6 months old...what is he?

He appears to be blue wheaten/buff.Buff is said to carry the wheaten gene.Wheaten is the go to color when trying to improve buff.It appears he is out of a project that used blue wheaten or buff can carry blue is some lines or breeds.

Anytime you cross out of the buff color line you get black or blue in the tail. Here are some examples.

It wouldn't be cheaper, as they would have to be imported or I would have to drive at least 18 hours to get them. Plus I don't like to take in adult birds due to biosecurity. I usually only hatch, or buy chicks.
It's not something I would consider selling as Ameraucana until I got it right and they breed true. I did buy them as Ameraucana, but he didn't cull ones that you would normally cull, so there's that..
and since we are talking eggs (above) One of the two started laying 2 weeks ago.

Very pretty blue if I do say so myself

Beautiful! Have at it then, that is one beautiful blue egg! I have heard some chickens can be hard to come by in Canada. It must be very frustrating.

Maybe we can just all start over. This thread has opinions but at least it seems everyone cares about the breed. some other threads offer little input or insight on there birds.
Here at least many people post pic's and opinions and ideas. sometimes short and too the point but for me I feel I can ask a question and get a answer or schrol through the thread and find what I need.
