Well folks,
I don't know how it happened but my Rottie and I were strolling through TSC today and we ran smack dab into a bin full of the cutest chicks

I have ever seen!! Ameraucana's they said. I am brand new to this chick business but I knew as soon as I laid eyes on them I had to take some home. Only one problem.......Straight Run. Now even though I have only been at this for one week, I am certain that I do not want a Roo.....yet. I had read a post here the other day about an old farmers trick to determining the sex. I had the guy at TSC picking up every single chick to see if their legs dangled or if they held them up.....and he didn't mind humoring a chick crazy lady! I am confident we picked only girls...(not really...lol). Anyway, my question is...what is the first sign I should look for as they get older to tell if any are Roos? So anyway.......Roo or no Roo....that is the question.....but I love em anyway!!

I have to run downstairs and try that on some that I already know what they are.... or does it only work on the couple day olds. Mine are almost 5 weeks now! Going to check.

I'm afraid that's more of an old hens' tale than fact. The only way to determine gender at this age is by vent sexing or by selecting a breed that has differentiation in gender color (sex link). In about five to six weeks, you'll be able to tell by seeing their combs and wattles. Good luck!

Guess you will find out how reliable this old wives tale is. Watch for the comb's turning red earlier, pointy feathers at the neck and tail area called the hackles and saddle feathers. Enjoy you new chickens. They are so much fun to watch.

P.S. Hatchery Ameracuan's are actually Easter Eggers. You can only get true Ameracuan's from breeders I love EE's they are like a box of chocolates you never know what color you will or what egg color they will lay. I have 3 bantam EE's that lay blue eggs I had one who laid green
