Ameraucana's at TSC

I have feather sexed twice now.....first time dead on acurate.....we will see this time. What I'm reading isn't what I did tho. I'm confused. My girls....and I know they are girls because they were bought as pullets....have all the same length feathers all the way across. My boys have longer flight feathers.

We have 4 chicks from a breeder who tried feather sexing for the first time. It doesn't sound like she breeds for it, she just thought she'd give it a try. They're seven weeks old now and we think one is a cockerel and three are pullets. Four is hardly enough to judge any sort of accuracy though. I got some day olds from a different breeder and tried feather sexing myself but they mostly all looked exactly the same to me, so we'll see. Mostly I went by colours based on things I've read here for the various breeds we picked. Now that they're just over a week, I've made some guesses based on how they're feathering out and I'm curious to see if my guesses prove true. One of the breeds are Welsummers. I picked out two with nice, clear triangles on their heads which I'd read here often means female, but now one has lots of wing and tail feathers and the other is barely feathered at all. It will be interesting for me to see if the colouring or the feathering ends up being "accurate" as far as if the second is a cockerel or a pullet.

The great thing about sexing a chick in any way but vent sexing, is that you know you will have half a chance of being right.

I read a nice little article in Practical Poultry magazine April issue,..out of the UK,..picked it up at TSC,..about egg-witching. They say it is 97% to 99% accurate,..also looking at the shape of the egg is 80% to 85% accurate. Not bad.

I am sure this method can also be used on chicks. I myself like the element of surprise,....

Egg-Witching is where you tie an object to a string and determine the sex by the movement of the object.

Haha yeah we were told that trick to. We tried and were told if legs dangled and they were still they were female...if they squirmed they were male. Well we tried that and well guess I think we got a roo DX

Oh and just thought I would add the lady said that someone had gone in there and told them about that way and the lady who told the lady at tsc about it apparently had very good luck with it....
