American as...well, frozen apples.

I be the freezing and unfreezing will soften them up a bit, making them easier for the chickens to eat.

I make cider every fall, so my girls get lots of apple pressings in the fall. While they don't seem to love them, they do all seem to disappear eventually (faster than they'd rot).
 
I gather wild, sour apples from the state gamelands next door (shhh--don't tell anyone) and the chickens go crazy for them. I'm sure they'll be happy to have some sweet ones.
