American Gamefowl

I always liked gamefowl since a boy my grandpa on my moms side actually was in the center of it here in Nc in the older days. We raised a few as I was growing up nothing serious. So it was a long wait for me and it's only easy if you ain't trying. Pens flipping and birds tearing themselves up hens about killing each other. Varmints, snakes, prey birds. Also culling weak birds instead of treating them for everything under the sun is a no no. I mean this passed year I was digging out pens in 2+ft of snow in single digits. You can't ever get comfortable because when you do it hits the fan I just stayed up for 28hrs straight to get a varmint after my birds not many will do such.

I recall you treating a bird for some kind of crazy disease it should have been culled for. There’s a big difference in “pets” and “gamefowl” You start treating instead of killing the weak and your just asking for problems. IMO If your contemplating taking your chicken to the vet gamefowl aren’t for you. Most issues can be resolved at home by the owner with a few things. Otherwise they should be put down for the benefit of the flock.

Yes that is true I did treat my flock for a respiratory infection. Yes maybe I should have culled them, but unfortunately I had just spent a pretty penny on them and didn’t want to just up and kill them a week into owning them. A friend sent me the number of their vet and I called him and he told me how to treat them. Maybe I don’t have the balls to actually cull a bird yet, but if quality of life isn’t what it should be I am all for humanely culling the bird.

Oh and last but not least some game hens are noisier than any rooster. Some are flat out loud and obnoxious. Seriously.

One of my Easter Eggers clucks for 2 minutes after laying an egg and she is really loud. My game hen will yell when she wants to be let out. I don’t mind chicken noises.

Crazy. But if you want to get anywhere and keep things under control it's gotta happen.
