Give lots of treats LOLOL! You could carry him around in a baby sling until he gets less scaredy!

So glad we have another Serama thread!!!

I am SOOO stinkin excited! I got my first Serama egg yesterday! None today, and she doesn't really have a nest box so will have to get one set up for her asap.

Question though...one of the two hens that i have has gray eyes and a rather small pupil. Only 4 months old or so when I got her. I've had two different people suggest Mareks??? What do you think? I know I can't bring myself to cull her. She seems perfectly fine.

I need an intervention. I have 3 incubators going!!!! Seriously what is my adiction with hatching eggs. And only a few are seramas.

There are actually several types of Mareks, one is ocular. It causes the eye to turn gray and the pupil is usually misshapen. It doesn't always kill them but it can cause blindness. I don't really think there is any test for Mareks until the bird is dead but I could be wrong. I have had friends with Mareks so I've helped them research it a lot.

She is definitely NOT blind. Anything else that would cause the gray eye and small pupil? I want to get some Serama from Grady Taylor, but don't want to do so until I know what's going on with her. I sure don't want to have to cull her, but don't want to spread anything to new birds either. I currently have a cockerel and another hen in with her.

I would maybe try to find out if there is someway to test for mareks on a live bird before making any decisions. There are so many things that mimic mareks.

Thanks. I've not heard there is any way to tell except postmortem, but I just can't bring myself to cull her. I've also read some info that suggests that her chicks might be resistant to Mareks??? I have had her since June with NO signs of anything being wrong with her at all.

I've heard that too...I've also heard the chicks could get it. I'm sorry I really don't have a lot of information for you.
