American serama thread!

Thanks. I've not heard there is any way to tell except postmortem, but I just can't bring myself to cull her. I've also read some info that suggests that her chicks might be resistant to Mareks??? I have had her since June with NO signs of anything being wrong with her at all.

I've heard that too...I've also heard the chicks could get it. I'm sorry I really don't have a lot of information for you.

Thanks anyway. I just don't know what to do with her. I could maybe get hubby to cull her if she acted sick somehow, but she doesn't. I know I don't have the heart to do it myself.

Hmmmmmm, odd. Sure wish I knew what is going on with her. I soooooo want to get some more Seramas. Been looking at yours too! I also didn't think I liked the silkies, but they have really grown on me and thinking I may have to have some of them too!

They are quite addicting! I hope you find out and I hope it's nothing

Give lots of treats LOLOL! You could carry him around in a baby sling until he gets less scaredy!

He has been being carried around with me and at night hubby stuffs him under his shirt lol

Well then, it's just a matter of time ... resistance is futile!

There are actually several types of Mareks, one is ocular. It causes the eye to turn gray and the pupil is usually misshapen. It doesn't always kill them but it can cause blindness. I don't really think there is any test for Mareks until the bird is dead but I could be wrong. I have had friends with Mareks so I've helped them research it a lot.

She is definitely NOT blind. Anything else that would cause the gray eye and small pupil? I want to get some Serama from Grady Taylor, but don't want to do so until I know what's going on with her. I sure don't want to have to cull her, but don't want to spread anything to new birds either. I currently have a cockerel and another hen in with her.

If you have room, you could just have a second serama coop, far away from the other coop, and not let them out in the same areas. Then you would know your other seramas wouldn't catch anything from your current group.

I have a dog crate / grow out pen on my porch. I use it for quarantine too, unless I have chicks on the porch too (separate brooder but too close together). Then I have to either have the chicks inside or the quarantine cage inside ... usually it's the chicks that stay outside, and the quarantine bird comes into the bathroom. In different weather, I just will have to be sure not to get new birds that need quarantine.

She has absolutely no other symptoms. She was like that when I got her.

Yes, I have plenty of room LOL. Would just have to build another pen. I already have 4 but 2 need repair, and one of those is right next to the pen the Serama is in. Stinks because each of these pens that are side by side are 12x36, so they are pretty big.

I plan on using dog crates with wire or some kind of mesh attached to keep trios in for breeding. Just need to acquire some XL crates, and then build covered tables for them to sit on.

https://www.backyardchickens.com/forum/viewtopic.php?id=524932 Here is the thread that has alot of information, this is a really current one. Let me warn you that the posters are a little drastic, but it had some good info. I for one would not cull my entire flock if one bird had mareks.

There was also a few other post that talked about mareks being spread by wild bird and that people should cull everything in one bird gets it. I am not sure where that post is .....but if you just type in mareks in the goggle search box it will bring up several discussions.
