I use sand in all my cages and even for newly hatched chicks too, its best for you to use the playsand due to the smaller pieces of poop food and shaving from the nest. To keep the sand sanitize, I switch it out every 3 months, soak it with bleach then rinse it throughly with water and leave it out to dry in the sun. The long handle reptile sand strainer works best with the playsand...yes, there will be dust but I always take my birds out and wear a mask or wrap my shirt around my nose for precautionary protection when ever I clean my cages. To prevent from having a wet spot from water spill, you need to mix up the sand every time after you clean it.
I have not encountered pasty but ever since I use sand along with the correct temperature the chicks need, the down size to it is your chicks might get some dry dust built up on their nails/claws and if you don't get that off it will make their toes/nail crooked. These are pics of my cages & birds;

one day old with mom, she has 2 more eggs under her that is why I put a little shaving on top of the sand.

almost 8 weeks old, these chicks are on all purpose sand (I started out with it but now using playsand).

Thanks Bobby....well, its the best way to cut back the cost and at the same time your birds can have dust bath anytime they want.

Thats what ive been thinking in the sand they can have a dust bath and alot better for them. Everyone here has gave me great idea's. I am hoping to get to where i can show some serama's and get things started around here. People around here has never heard of them. I have shown some people and they are are like wow.

You should of get together with Jun and a few others in your area to start your serama club....then have your own show and it will attract more people like what we did over here in SoCal. Just remember to train your birds to pose & strutt on all type of surfaces so you guys can have a table top judging at your show.

I had some pep talk with BigB-71 when he came down to my place for a visit and now he wants to host a serama show up north where he lives.

I think Jun is the best person for you to talk to if you want to start your club and showing, she has enough knowlege to pull it off.

I have had sand inside both of my coops and also in my Serama cage. There doesn't seem to be any perfect bedding, but this is pretty easy to clean. Sometimes I'll just sit on a stool in the coop and using a fine wire basket, I will sift the sand and have a chat with the chickens. It's very therapeutic!! I have found that my hens still like shavings in the nest boxes. Some of it gets into the sand but it can't do any harm and my hens are happier.

Similair experience chickenaddict: My Mom passed, from cancer, in June and I have had to go back to Chicago 3 times so far, for a WEEK at a time, leaving my BABIES with a roommate. I was chewing my nails to nubs from worry. They were just fine each time I returned and SO HAPPY to see me! The last time I had a Fuzzy born one hour before I was to leave for the airport- talk about frantic! I actually got lucky on that because, I was the first person fuzzy saw, she was still wet when I checked under momma. Remember, you are only a phone call away....and DO NOT have SO let them out of thier safe enclosure ~~~
