American serama thread!

Here are some more pictures of Charles. He gets all excited when I aproach the cage and he spent the entiire time trying to escape and get away from me. When he is relaxed, his head comes back, his breast comes out, and his tail looks a little more balanced, but still a bit stretched out.

Also, let's test how much i know: Feel free to critiue my critique. I will also add that he was purchased as an American Serama and would be shown as an American. If that helps.

I'm thinking he could be a bit shorter in the back and saddle area to pull his type and posture together. His breast is a bit long and this combines with the longer back and causes him to reach a bit with his posture. all in all he needs to be a bit more compact instead of long and lanky.

Certainly not a show winner, but I love him anway. Since I couldn't afford the $150+ that others were asking in my area, I purchased the best I could afford, which was Charles and his two ladies. I figure these will be good to get started with and to learn a bit about the genetics and breeding of Seramas. I purchased them at a poultry swap and I really love them.

This is probably about the dumbest question but I need the answer to it. I have read seramas do not breed true to any one color. Does this mean I can just pair up two completely different colored seramas and be fine?

yup you dont have to but you can make them breed true by selective breeding just like any other breed mother nature has it's laws ...

there is no such thing as long breast seramas??? Long back cant never be shorten ... You can select and cull hard but it will take you some time if you want to breed from him ... IMHO

Well when I do set up my breeding pens I will try my best to pair up the same colored birds. I do have a few odd balls who don't have a color buddy. Would you mind posting pictures of the seramas you have paired up?

So, long breast is something you want? In any breed it is possible to have too long of a breast, but his is the right length, then.

Would a serama need a shorter back and saddle in order to achieve the correct posture?

I'm just trying to learn the mechanics of serama posture and how it is achieved.

i'm not saying that his back can be just miraculously shortened, however, were it possible to suddenly change him up I'm just wondering what could be changed to make him correct in type.
