American serama thread!

Awww, so sorry Sumatra! But you're about to hatch a bunch of beauties! Look forward to those and it won't hurt so much! (Just trying to make you feel better, I don't really know what I'm talking about

GrandmaBird, I do think some people keep their birds in a separate room in their house, but I really don't know what it's like? I assume you'd want to design the cage to minimize bedding leaking out, etc...?

Anyone keep these in the house? I wonder about the smell and dust? What size inclosure do they need? Can or should they be kept caged up? thanks

I have my favorites in the house at night to keep me company and just for fun. I do not do diapers because the room we hang out in has concrete floors and is my "junk/work" room. Sometimes one or two will follow me to the kitchen in the AM when I make up their goodies. Yes the room gets more dusty but there is no smell, cuz I have napkins to pick up the poops and they have a cage w/ shavings to sleep in. I don't even have to bother closing it anymore.
They are GREAT housepets! :love

My newest Serama! 5 1/2 days old now, and getting some wing feathers in. She is mostly white/creamy all over, with the darker dun color down her back, and now her wing feathers are coming in at least partially dark...chocolate? It's not black for sure, maybe blue? I DON'T KNOOOOW >.< Serama color... making us guess forever. LOL!

yep- wonderful house pets- how can you resist those little charmers!
i mean just look at Joe

he's my main boy!!

and these two come home tomorow- from June- they will be my studio mascots- named them Ebony and Jet

Thanks All for the info. on Laura's eggs.. New stupid question: has anyone had them shipped cross country?

Grandma Bird: DH is currently building me a mini coop and run in the basement.I'll post pics when he's done. I have little choice because of the harsh winters here. We'll see, but I'm not expecting too much mess. They have the tidiest coop now, besides, I've had parrots. Parrots are messy!!!

Thanks everyone for the information. I have an acquaintance who is raising them and selling eggs for incubating but I am just not sure about having them. I live in a stupid town that doesn't allow chickens, anyway not yet (I'm working on them), so was thinking if I can keep them inside I wont have to worry about the no chicken thing. Do the roosters crow? And if so is it very loud? Do they carry diseases? I have button quail and a budgie now and would like to add Serama's to my group/flock. So many questions so little time....

I had some in the house last year through the fall and winter, because they came from SoCal and weren't used to WA weather, so I'll try to answer your questions from my experience.

Yes, they smell like chickens and yes, they create a lot of dust. They were really messy. I kept mine in rabbit cages that I got at PetSmart with wood shavings for bedding, Dimensions: 40.5”L x 17.25”W x 18”H http://www.petsmart.com/product/index.jsp?productId=4470998&lmdn=Pet+Type

Yes, the roosters crow. Are they very loud? That's kind of subjective. I would say no, they're not very loud, but my husband would disagree. They drove him absolutely crazy and he was irritated every morning when they woke him up crowing.

They can carry the same diseases as any chicken. I would guess that some diseases chickens can carry could be transmitted to your quail and budgies, but I would ask an avian vet about that.

I love my little Seramas, but I would not have them in the house again. Sorry, I know this seems really negative, but I wanted to give another perspective. I think it depends on how much mess and noise you can tolerate in the house.

I don't think chickens will have any more diseases than any other domesticated bird or pet for that matter. There is the bird flu but there is no reason for your bird to catch it especially if it's in the house. The roos do crow, usually much less loudly than a larger bird, but individual birds can be manic about crowing, or mostly silent, you never know?

Good luck with your choices!!! I just have eggs in the incubator, no Seramas yet, but I'm so excited and am hoping the two that got this far, and are due to hatch early next week make it!!!
