American serama thread!

That's such a cool picture of Ebony, artsyrobin, your birds are so beautiful!

kukupecpec, it looks like they're pretty overgrown. They've probably been kept indoors on soft material with nothing to scratch and keep their nails under control. You're so lucky to be so skilled! I have not trimmed nails yet, My leghorns seem to have too-long an upper beak, and I'm wondering how to trim them. I've given them bricks to poke at in their cage and they're outside the whole day, so I'm really hoping it'll happen naturally

Not looking forward to manhandling them! A blanket to keep any light out can help a little, but they may crow anyway. Only thing I can think of is a specialty "box" with sound proofing and muffled vents which you could build, but it'd be rather expensive. They really need air movement. I've been able to keep my cockerels from crowing until about 7-8 am with a darkening material on the cage, depending on how much movement there is in the house, LOL. Today, Sunday, 8am, weekdays, we tiptoe but they usually catch on that the house is awake and go off by 7

I'm hoping they'll be going today to a guy with many hens and outside the city!

Brookhavens - Taco and Belle! That's adorable! I'll have to run that by the boys, I bet they'll love it!

Oh man I wish mine was like a squeaky toy haha he's pretty loud! But maybe he's quiet compared to others? My neighbors roo doesn't crow very often but he doesn't seem very loud.

My husband tossed a down quilt over them this morning and that muffled it pretty well. I was thinking maybe just making a cover i could toss on at the first crow? Our room was still pitch black at 5am when he started going off.

I'm really surprised that I like the older chickens better than baby chicks. They're so much fun to watch and are way more huggable when they're bigger. So I am really looking forward to my baby Serama growing up. It's feathers are coming in kind of grey/white striped or something and looks so cool, but of course it's only a week old.... got a long time to wait before I can see what it turns out to be! I'm hoping dearly for a boy!

So far all they have done is poop LOL not sure I want that in their names ha
I am familiar with "quicking" in dogs for nail trimming. With them, if you trim the nail so it has a flat surface which is basically straight up and down, and then trim the upper half further back at a 45 degree angle, it helps the quick retract even better. Is there anything like this for chickens? Or should I just trim her back with straight cuts? Oh! And can I file the edges so they aren't too sharp? She's still a little skittish so I don't want her scratching the heck of anyone or her mate.
Oh the joy of new pets! This is my first rooster of any kind, so when his internal clock went off at 5am, boy was that interesting. They are living in my room so that loud little crow was LOUD
anyone else have completely indoor seramas? What do you do about the crow? My husbands wants me just to make a really thick quilted type cage cover that will muffle him, but I'm afraid they'll roast in there if its thick enough to muffle him.

We talked about keeping Seramas in the house several pages back, I think.

It helps to cover them at night, like you would a parrot, but it doesn't solve the crowing problem 100%.
