American serama thread!

Aw, it's sad, Serama Hen, but She'll be happier with her friends

I don't know, gardeningmama, it looked like mine were shrink wrapped, I had humidity around 25-40, if I remember, then all the way up to 80 when they started dieing on me and were looking so dry?! I was doing the "dry" method, trying to keep humidity down, but maybe that was too much. Next time I plan on keeping a steady 40-45 and then on the 16th day, up the humidity. But at the same time, I'm going to keep an eye on the air sack development and adjust accordingly in not so drastic increments! I think I was a little too fussy with them

gabriella, one lady on this forum does make very inexpensive diapers that look really good, forgot her name though, do a search in the sales thread!

I am looking for diapers and harnesses for my 3 serama and 1 silkie does anyone know where I can get them ,
And I have a question aobut my little whiteish hen , she is the same size as the serama and hatched from a serama egg but she is longer Im not sure how to describe it , the others hold there tail up high and there heads but she holds her self longer ??
awwwww how cute!! Did you hatch your own or buy peeps?

Quote: Thanks! have you noted the developement for rolling air cells from shipped eggs? (on any breed eggs) So far I had a partially detatched hatch but have YET to have a rolling or bubbly looking air cell do anything.....

oh and what do you keep humidity at and when and how much do you change it?

Thank you so much for your help!! I so want my little girl to get some to Hatch!!! she is too cute! Harmony keeps checking the time and then lets me know that she has to go turn her eggs, I am proud of that kiddo! She can be very messy but let me tell you she has a great memory!

Sally Sunshine, thanks for the info. I actually read that whole thing. Feeling pretty smart right about now!! LOL! I just set my Serama eggs from Beth a week ago, with 11 heartbeats. Only 2 detached air cells , so maybe your mail truck hit a pothole.. kidding

. BTW I stumbled on the pic you posted on Pennsylvania Unite of the turkeys bound for processing. I kept thinking of it tonight as I was marinating that bird!! I just may raise my own next year because of that pic. So, thanks, I think???

I think the mail truck hit an airplane! LOL Thats awesome though!! when do u candle again? Harmony (my daughter) will be sooooo excited if they develope and she can actually see in the eggs this time, the maran and brahma are too dark and our candler is horrible, but these guys you could see so well.... I should video tape her doing the day 7 candle! LOL

I wish I could raise turkeys, only trouble is I need an enclosed run or something for them, we are in the mnt and the wilds will steal them from me! I have a friend who said he would do the deed at the holidays.... still pondering that. What do you marinate with?
we bake our turkey in a brown paper bag and I only add butter salt and pepper lol....... I feel stupid reading that you marinate!

In my first hatch of Serama's I had one with a really wonky air cell. It actually looked like a horseshoe and believe it or not it hatched. By leaving the eggs sit for the 7 days I have noticed that some of the rolling aircells have become less "rolly." My reasoning on letting them sit that long are because those first days are when the cells are dividing and the veining is just starting to snake outward toward the shell. By not turning the eggs you are giving the embryo a stable environment to develop and get as strong as it can before you do start turning. By day 7-8 all the major organs have formed and the embryo has a better chance of survival when you start turning it.

The first 18 days I keep humidity around 40-45. I use the aircell size to judge if it is too high or too low. When they go into lockdown I raise the humidity to 62-63% and then when the first one pips I up it to 65-68%. That's here in Florida though. It took me quite a few hatches to find out what works for me. I went by the book the first time and had very wet, sticky chicks. Then I tried dry hatching and hatched a few more chicks but still had a low hatch rate. I decided to do a combination of the two and have finally found what I was looking for.

http://www.squidoo.com/mailed-shipped-fertilised-chickens-eggs-fertilized-hatching-chicken-egg This link was posted by a member of my East TN thread about detached air sacks. Its got some really great info and it does work. I had 2 silkies that hatched fine after following this link. Just thought you folks might want to read it. I ordered small numbers, so it was nice to save the 2 I had to make me a nice 6/6 hatch.

Good Hatching!

Thank you for the link. That is pretty much what I do with shipped eggs. I just candled a batch of shipped eggs that are on day 7 and ready to start being turned tonight. Out of 10 eggs I have 7 embryos developing. The other 3 have no development but I will leave them in until I candle again.
