American serama thread!

Hey all. I've been popping in here now and then and saw the disscussion about ID'ing chicks. I've been wondering about ways to ID chicks as well. I'm getting 6 Bantam RIR's in January, and I already have names picked out. (Is that sad)?? Anyways, I want to be able to tell them apart, and I checked the spiral leg bands on Meyer Hatchery that someone suggested. It said they could fit a Bantam hen. Wouldn't that be too big for a Bantam chick? Has anyone heard about using washable markers and making little dots on the chicks head? They do that at the feed stores in my area to sort the chicks. Has anyone tried it?

I was amazed that the highlighter marker (orange) stayed on my Sultans longer than my black sharpie permanent marker! I used the orange on the girls, black on the boys, and I can still see the orange but the black was all gone a while ago!

But I just use zip ties..... 6 colors /left or right foot gave me 12 variations. Also, my sultans are all white, I don't think I could see the colors on any of my colored seramas (I have black or white birds, except for the Seramas ;) )

There are 5/16 leg bands for chicks. Then as they grow, you can change them to the larger bands. They come in 11/16 & 3/4" for older birds.

Leg bands for chicks try these on ebay "100 leg bands small size 3" these are elastic, they come in 6 different colors a 100 are only $7 and they work great!! I have been using them for the last 3 years then when they get old enough you switch them out with ABA bands.
