American serama thread!

So I went ahead and enlarged the pictures. What does everyone think of her? Should I show her, or would it be a waste of my time? She is 6 months old.

Yes, she is missing lots of her tail feathers thanks to my Cochin. They have grown back a lot though. And, of course, she did not like the photo shoot this morning.
She's so pretty!!! I don't know anything about showing though, sorry =(
I absolutely love the deep color around her neck, what a pretty girl!

Belle got a new harness for school today!

Field trip TO school? lol

Thank you. :) She's a wheaton, I just got her in October at the last show I went to. A very nice lady gave her to me, who breeds them, so I'm assuming she's show quality? Also, I know there's class A/B and micro Serama's, what size would she be? I could go and try and get another better pic of her compared to something.

Thank you.

The classes are actually by weight. What you find online can sometimes vary a little but here is what Castle Delight Seramas has posted on all of their pages

ROOSTERS HENS

Micro - under 9 ounces Micro - under 8 ounces
A - 9.1 to 13 ounces A - 8.1 to 12 ounces
B - 13.1 to 16 ounces B - 12.1 to 15 ounces
C - 16.1 to 19 ounces C - 15.1 to 17 ounces
D - over 19.1 ounces D - over 17.1 ounces

Most places you will see these weights listed by grams - the calsses originated in metric so the grams are much nicer numbers haha, but this is the same, just in terms easier for us silly non-metric americans

Here it is in grams if you prefer

[FONT=Arial,Helvetica,adobe-helvetica,Arial Narrow]Mature Serama Males
Class A upto 350 grams (12.35 oz)
Class B upto 500 grams (17.64 oz)
Class C upto 600 grams (21.16 oz)

[FONT=Arial,Helvetica,adobe-helvetica,Arial Narrow]Mature Serama Females
Class A upto 325 grams (11.46 oz)
Class B upto 425 grams (14.99 oz)
Class C upto 525 grams (18.52 oz)

Alright, thank you. I'll have to weigh her here in a little bit- If I can get her to stand still, lol.

I have a few questions , Iloved the pics by the way that harness isso cute where did you get it?
1. How often do serama hens go broody? Are they one of the breeds that have had it pretty much bred out of them?
2.If I breed a frizzle hen to a reg serama roo will any eggs have the chance of hatching a frizzle?
3.Are they easy to get to ride in the car and go to school and stufflike that , I want to take mine to the school my son goes to.
4.Will the chicks only be the colors of the parents ?
King George

Mini (black frizzle)

Sweety pie

I was looking at your charts all three of these guys are about a pound I think but I havent weghed them only there two sibliings I sent to someone but they look about the same size. IF they are all in the C class does taht mean My son cant show them ?
Thank you

To answer question 2, NEVER, never ever breed a Frizzle to a Frizzle. If you do, the offspring will have an extra dose of the frizzling gene, thus causing very breakable and not a lot of feathers. You want to breed Frizzle to smooth. 75% of the offspring will be frizzled and the other 25% will be smooth. Hope that helps. As far as colors, I don't know to much, but I know you'll get some blacks and splash for sure.

down to 4 viable and into the hatcher they go!!!

sending good wishes your way!!
Good Luck!!! I refrained from candling again, mine are on the 13th day...i will probably look tomorrow cause i cant stand it...lol
I don't think candling hurts them, though it increases the chance of them getting dropped, LOL, that's all. But it is important to know what's going on inside the egg because if one goes rotten, you'd never know it if you don't check them out, and if it explodes, it'll infect all the other eggs, so don't be too paranoid about candling :)
So I'm debating showing my Serama in March and April. But I'm not sure it would be worth it. Here is a very bad picture, I will try and get another one later today:
I was thinking the same thing, then I thought, I will never learn if I don't dive in. I have some hatchery stock birds that I'm really interested in learning about, and I think, if I have the time and money, I'll enter some in a show so that I can ask people and judges what my birds are lacking and see with my own 3-d eyes what good show quality stock really have going for them. It's really the only way to learn. Just have to be thick skinned when they say "oh, your bird is too skinny, the feathers twist wrong, and their eyes are the wrong color! It's not personal, it's what it is. Doesn't make your bird any less a wonderful pet or egg layer!

Now, as for your hen, I have no idea, ROFL (lotta help, eh?) I've just learned how a full crop looks, so ???? She does seem to have a nice chest on her *maybe* (big *maybe*) a slightly longer back than perfection??? But then she is a hen and her tail was damaged and it seems like her wings could go a little more vertical??? Honestly, I'm just trying to put stuff out there, things to look at. I LOVE her buff coloring and think she's a beauty :) I don't think my birds are going to be SQ, but I can't help but want to try my hand at (slowly as I don't have much room) breeding some of them, but want to do it with an educated guess, so I'm trying to learn as much as I can ;P
Aschenfire, I wanted to let you know that this post was the one that sold me on seramas :) Have a dozen or so coming for NYD hatch-along!!!!
Aren't they gorgeous roos?!?!
Well,my Mille Fleur D' Uccle Roo has finally started doing his job, and my Mille Fleur pullet just started laying 2 weeks ago, so.....
Where do I go to sign up?
I'll be around a laptop Sunday, so finally able to post my baby pics!! I swear I'm headed straight to Best Buy at tax time!
Oh, yes, please do! Here is the link! : https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/720896/4th-annual-byc-nyd-hatch-a-long/1510#post_10042937

Oh, your kids should definitely show their birds! Great experience, lots to learn, and there is NOTHING wrong with a class C, in fact, C and B make the best breeders.

#1 dunno, sorry, LOL but I have read here that many have gone broody and were good mothers?
#2 answered by BantyChickenLuv ;)
#3 I would get a dog crate, you don't want them getting excited and distracting you while you're trying to drive! They'll also need a place to have their food and water, and the crate would be like their portable coop, but other than that, I'm sure they could get used to traveling all the time and enjoy it. Just know that it *could* expose them to more germs... but then it's fun, so...? Your choice, LOL.
#4 Highly unlikely. There are very few colors that are currently breeding true more than 50% of the time, which is required for an accepted veriety. Right now, white is the only recognized variety, black is supposed to be recognized soon, and there are a few other colors that are almost to the point that they will be submitted for acceptance with the APA. But most of our birds don't breed true to color, and I love that (especially since we can still compete table top). It's so much fun to see what the chicks become, like a present slowly being opened, LOL.

I didn't know it would give a 75% hatch rate! I thought only 50%? Gotta read up on that and see why that is, LOL. Makes me very happy to read though because I have one, only one, egg from a frizzle hen, and I SO want a frizzle, LOL

thanks! I made the harness myself. I kind of just started working from the designs I've seen on here and have been tweaking it little by little to work better for my seramas. Belle is gettting really goo with her harness/diapers. She can play all the way to the top of the kitchen cupboards with it on now!
