American serama thread!

Ok, thanks for letting me know.
I think i'm going to wait. From the research i've done, it seems like they're more pets. I would love a few and i'd love to breed them but having chickens in the house is something my husband will have to warm up to. LOL

Not everyone keeps their birds in the house. Mine are outside in 2 X 4' cages, and they are my show (or potential) show birds. These guys are for sure not your standard egg-laying chicken. Yes the eggs are edible, but this breed is still really new outside of it's native Malaysia, and it's more a breed for fanciers or for those wanting pretty little pet type birds for their yard or yes, in the house. You will not find them available at any hatchery... only from private breeders, either by buying live birds or hatching eggs

Actually before I fund this wonderful site I was looking for a place to buy Serama and I found this place - http://ourflybabies-chickensforsale.com/Serama-chickens-for-sale.html
I THINK it's a hatchery.
Although I never ended up buying anything from them. I went straight to private breeders.

My mottled pullet looked a lot like them when she was younger.

So cute! I think your little girl would be considered exchequer rather than mottled... completely black and completely white feathers = exchequer/pied. I love them either way! I'll be putting my little girls back in with their Daddy when they are old enough, for an exchequer project

Thanks, I wasn't sure exactly what color, but that makes sense. She looks nothing like my mottled jap chicks, they start all yellow, then white, then the black feathers start coming in later.

well basically Serama in Malaysia are small(bantam),they can expand their chest so big that their head look like it was eaten by the chest,if u give em a bowl of pellet, they will surely finish it due to their nasty appatite, they are small but very brave, try to introduce Shamo or Asil chicken,100% the Serama will attack, but surely he will be deafeted cause of its small size,Serama Tournament are held in many part of Malaysia, they are 2 chickens tournament that held in Malaysia, the legal and the illegal, the Legal one is the Serama Tournament, the illegal one is the Cockfight, here in Malaysia we dont have Chicken Exibition like in america,if there is then there's not much maybe 1 or 2 event once in 3 years maybe...some say that Serama were crossbreed between chicken and a pigeon because of its small size however NO one realy knows their breed originated from they only know Serama as Serama, and the most cool parts of the Serama is their Chest, because they can expand their chest so big and stand straight like a soldier dropping its wing down with is small size people start to introduce them as house pet and for Tournament purpose,Serama are also the smallest breed there is,they have high pitch crow and travel quite a distance, they show off alot, they are brave, they are proud they are nice to hold..here are some Malaysia Serama

Mine seem quite content to stay put, although when I first brought in the originals, I clipped one wing good and short to make sure that any flight would be low and slow (ha!). They roam mostly under the rabbitry and associated trees/buildings, so the hawks don't have a lot of chances at them....but since we now have THREE mated pairs of screeching hawk hunters, I'm working on finishing up the Serama-specific coop. Already did finish the 'queen's quarters' for the setting gals.

I've seen Serama (one in particular, the wildest, craziest white roo I have ever seen/met/tried to catch) fly some incredible distances and heights, so don't let 'em fool ya--they can FLY quite well.

I love having them free but it's not worth losing any.....so they're getting a nice-sized flight coop with an enclosed end for roosting/laying etc. 8'long, six high, four wide....should be able to have enough perches etc to keep them content. :)

Seramas are ornamental chickens in the truest terms! You can show them in Serama Table Top Shows and the white color is now accepted for showing in cage with the American Poultry Association. They make WONDERFUL pets. They have personality plus and each one has his own little personality quirks, like people!]. I don't think it would take too long for hubby to warm up to one of these little birds.
