no broken eggs however................
I need to admit.I do not add grit.........really feel in conflict after reading the previous post
about not using it............Always thought I should and kept forgetting to add it. My stock seem
fine though and some are three years old?????????????
Spending the day clipping toenails and beaks...........
I love having time to hold them..such sweet little critters...............

I have a few more questions about my chicks:) How long do most people grind up the food for, how do I check them for pasty butt if the mom is REALLY protective, what age do I take them away from mom, and what type of bedding do most people use (both for the adults and for the hen with babies)? Thanks for everyone's help:)

My one little Serama hen, Daisy, is sitting on 3 of hers and Duke's eggs...LMAO - figured that if she was gonna get broody may as well let her try to hatch them. Waiting to see how that turns out. Only been 2 days tho, so she has a long road to go...IF she will stick with it!

My birds are all in cages and most all are show birds. They go out in drop pens for a short while for sun but mostly get sun and fresh air in the cages so their feathers are protected. The commercial feeds provide all the necessary nutritional elements needed in the diet. There is no need for grit or oyster shell or any of that. All my birds have excellent feather quality, shine and are very healthy with only the best commercial feeds I can buy.

Mine are all on shavings. I like shavings because they are clean and I can easily vacuum cages out as often as necessary which is at minimum, once per week. I grind up chick starter for about a month then slowly add unground in until I have weaned them to regular, unground chick starter. I have no problem with protective moms, I'm bigger! I just reach in and grab the baby, check the bottom and put them back in. My incubator hatched chicks go into a brooder with indoor/outdoor carpet on the bottom. This way, I can easily see when water is spilled and swap out the carpet ever day to keep it really clean.

HI,
I don't worry about when to seperate chicks and Mom's.
The hen will decide on her own when it is time. I often do not seperate them unless
I am putting Mom with a rooster or there is a reason..............
I am still experimenting with bedding.Tried sand and ruined feathers.right now I am back to wood chips.
Feed for little ones the same as ocserama...............They grow so fast....
Good luck and have fun
