American serama thread!

Most people recommended putting the new hen in at night and the others, when they wake up in the morning, don't remember who was there and who wasn't the night before. There may be squabbles here and there but that's it... I have done this with success.

As for hatching eggs, the reason I want the ones I have is they may be SQ... Which is what I want. Also, they were very cheap, and the breeder was very kind and sent a whole ton of extras...

Be sure to put them in a new area and not into the serama cage or the other bird's cage. This will help eliminate the birds protecting their space.

Hello everybody, new to the thread here.

I was wondering if any of you have any experiences with Seramas as therapy/companion birds? I have mild autism, as well as problems with anxiety and depression, but function much better with a companion bird by my side. I had a Belgian d'Uccle hen as a companion, but unfortunately she passed away from cancer about a year ago. Over the past few months I decided I was ready to start searching for a new best friend, and Seramas piqued my interest.

Does the breed do well kept "alone"? I mean, obviously the bird wouldn't really be alone, she or he would be with me almost 24/7, but there would be no other chickens around. It seems like Seramas really thrive off human attention and companionship, which is exactly what I'm looking for (a snuggle-butt to sit with me and follow me around everywhere), but since I have no experience with them I can really only go off observations. Do you think a Serama would be right for my needs? Should I search more for a hen or rooster, or would either be suitable? I was leaning more towards a hen, but really the bird's personality is more important than any other factor.

Thanks in advance for any input! :)

HI,
I think it is a grest breed for what you want...but mine..........like any living things...........have thier own personality.
I have one Roo that I believe would rather be with my husband and I than with the other chickens..He talks to me constantly
when I have him in the house.........I have another that loves his hens and will not let me get close.
I would suggest that you let the folks on here help you find Just the right bird............=) Good luck.
oh, and my Sramas keep me peaceful..make me luagh..give me a reason to get up in the morning

i agree! i only have one serama that i love to death! of course she loves me because i hatched her... she is so sweet and trusts me! for example, i was outside with her and a cat showed up. instead of running away she protected me and attacked the cat. thank g-d she wasn't hurt! she bit the cat in the eyeball and it ran away in fear. she then came to me and flew on my shoulder! another time a hawk swooped down at her while we were in the garden (seramas have very good reflexes!) before the hawk could get her she jumped under me seeking protection instead of flying away. i would suggest getting a chick if possible, they will think your their mom! or just simply hatch one out! i got my baby from Charliesweb1k on youtube. i hatched her out of eggs he sent me. if you were to keep your serama inside i would suggest getting some chicken diapers! then she/he can run around your house like a dog without pooping everywhere! and i think you just throw them (the diapers, not the serama lol) in a washing machine at the end of the day! here's his email: [email protected], this is if you want to buy hatching eggs to incubate. and if you live near Seattle washington, he is selling adult birds that are laying eggs and crowing, i guess just email him about that too. unless you want eggs every week, get a rooster. their crow (cockadodledoo) is not as loud as regular chickens, and they are very sweet and gentle!

- watch this video with Charlie and a rooster in his house!

G-d bless and good luck to you, and may your serama make you smile every morning like mine has!

Oh and P.S: they are super tiny! about the size of a coconut! and they weigh about 12 - 14 ounces for girls and 15-16 ounce for boys! Good luck!
