American serama thread!

crowing at all...

shes only 16 weeks 2 days, or 3 months 23 days? shes not squating when i pet her... when do you think she will lay her first egg?
Mine started within 2-3 weeks of their combs getting bright red and growing, so I would say you don't have long.

this was my post yesterday:

my serama is starting to worry me. her comb is starting to get bigger? do you guys think it has something to do with the new cockerel i put in the coop? today she feels heavier, comb a little redder and bigger, and her tail looks more open then ever, and her vent is a little bigger than usual? she is exactly 113 days old today. could this mean she is ready to lay eggs? yesterday she was normal, today shes different?

the person i bought the eggs off of said his birds didnt start laying until 5-6 months old? only comb is big, watlles and earlobes are same size, just redder.
Ok, it's still not a cockerel comb, and that vent looks excellent for laying, She is just reaching her age of maturity.

HI everyone,
Have not posted in awhile but have been following the posts..........
I mentioned some time ago I had given two broody hens eggs....one egg hatched about a month ago.
The one hen continued her broody behavior so I gave her three eggs.they have been sharing.
One cares for the chick while the other tends to the eggs and then they switch off.
I had given up on the eggs.......forgot to write the set date on the calender.
Was going to toss them and discovered I had written the date on the egg with pencil.
March 9th......sooooo............may have chicks yet........maybe today..........

There is nothing better than watching our chickens be chickens.

Just one more thing..........I have some Roos that are loud and crow quite a bit.
I also have two that are so layed back that they rarely crow.........
A cover on the cage usually discourages early morning crowing...........

Good thoughts and vibes sent your way.................

Herducks, I LOVE his coloring! Where did you get him?

I got him from a friend of my aunts in VA. He has been breeding for this color for years. He let me buy this one as he is the largest of his 4 spangled roos. I have him in with my smaller hens. I can't wait to see what I get!

well, i guess ill end the night with a funny story! to fill you guys in i have two chickens. one serama (hen), one bantam Americana (rooster). long story short i want my serama to feel like she was bred in order for her to lay her first eggs! stupid me i forgot that the serama is the dominant one. i thought it would be a good idea to put the rooster on top of the hen to simulate breeding. the second i put the roo down she chased him for the next hour! i think i screwed up the pecking order!
