American serama thread!

I just got a new job and so haven't really figured out what my plan is with housing Taco as he is currently free ranging my house lol.
I was wondering - I left the lid off the feed tub all day so he would have access to it - I usually just let him in 3 times a day to eat what he wants and then close it back up - and when I got home he is definitely dust bathing in the feed. Is this bad? I mean I would think he's pretty darn clean as he got bathed and now hasn't left the house. He wears a diaper so he's not pooping in it either.
Just thought I would see what you guys think
LOL, I guess if there is no poop in the feed, it should be ok :)
Sorry about disappearing on everyone! I haven't gotten much sleep the past couple nights, and today I was preoccupied with some storms coming through. The good news is, I GOT FOUR CHICKS! I ended up having to assist the little guy that pipped in the middle of his egg. He hadn't made any progress in about 36 hours, so I gently started zipping for him with a tiny pair of blunt tweezers. Absolutely no blood, and his yolk was completely absorbed, so he was ready to come out. He's quite happy and healthy now!

After everyone was hatched and removed from the incubator, I quickly candled to see if anyone else was alive. Looks like four of the eggs quit around day 19, and in the last egg the poor chick was positioned upside down and wasn't able to pip. So, no more eggs left... but four healthy chicks just blows my mind! I was going to be ecstatic just getting one to hatch! I'll likely keep all four for a week or two to make sure they're healthy and to see who bonds with me the most, then I'll find homes for the ones I can't keep.

Now for the chick-pics!

The one on the left in this last photo just hatched this morning, a full day after the others. He hasn't completely fluffed out yet, which is why he looks a little funky. Everyone is being very nice to him though, and of course they're all getting a ton of love from me.

Oh, they're so darn cute! Congratulations!
My little Raine got stuck in the shell in the middle of zipping. I ended up helping her, and, like you, she was totally ready to hatch, no blood, veins, or yolk, she just got stuck! Today she is my best chicken friend. Here she is tonight:

She looked very similar to your chick, with that gooish stuff on the fluff... I heard it is cause by being stuck in the shell too long? Not sure if this is true or not. BTW, love your babies!
Awww, so sweet!
OMG! mabe wait 3 weeks and se which ones are hens and which ones are roosters! i hatched the same color as that black one! this is what she looked like and looks like! she is from charlie!

She's absolutely stunning! My boy, Sirius, looked like that. He started out all black too, but ended up having red hackle feathers!
Hi everyone! I have been lurking for a while and love seeing all your adorable little birds. My son joined 4H this year and wants to focus on Seramas. We got 2 chicks from a tabletop show in March, just to make sure he really likes the breed. Turns out we all do!

Here are how Coffee (black) and Donut looked when we got them home.

And a week later.

They grow so fast.

These are the most recent pics.

I have a question about rooster temperament. Mostly Donut is fine and friendly, but occasionally gets a bit startled and will peck your hand. I have been picking him up and holding him when he does this, but am wondering if there are any tips for encouraging good behavior. Thanks!

this is actually a small flower pot (Nest Box)!

I honestly think the boys mature (become fertile, not fully grown though) much faster than the girls. But wow, that's early!
do you guys think she will lay another tomorrow?
They don't lay every day, and you don't want to fuss with her too much, she might get nervous. They like a quiet place that's secluded a bit to lay.
Here are mine, how is the quality?

My boy:

Hen 1:

Hen 2:
It's so hard to tell from pictures, 'cause they're usually wandering around doing stuff, pecking at things, and not in "pose", but they do seem good from what I can see! Is that a milli fluer color on your hen? How beautiful!
You're in Oregon...Talk to CastleDelights Seramas up thataway. I got 15 eggs from her a bit back and 11 hatched under a broody. They're now very (!) independent and looking quite promising! Hearing good things from others who got stock from her, as well. PM me for her email, if you like. :)
I second Castle delights!

i don't know if this was stupid of me or not.... i went to go give my chickens a cob of corn to peck at alittle... my serama hen was going into the Coop, making alittle noise, and frequently going to the nest boxes. no one loves sweet corn more than my serama hen. as soon as she saw me she went into the run pecking. did i just cause her to not lay her egg today?

You are so funny, Larps.
Yes, they stay that noisy!

Lol thanks! Last thing! I know of a rooster that some farmer dropped off near a local super market. He is not huge, but he is bigger than my serama... I see him all the time and he tends to run away from humans, not charge at them. Do you think it would be a good Idea to tie a soft string aroun my seramas leg so I can keep her from running or getting hurt, and take her to the rooster to mate??? She is squatting a lot, and I really want chicks.

It will probably take awhile. Can you try to catch him?
