American serama thread!

when do you guys tthink my serama pullet will lay her second egg? she laid first one yesterday! she wighs 20.50 oz

Seramas with their egglaying is like a crap shoot......GENERALLY speaking every other day. SOme are 2-3 times a week, on occasion it is more or less than this rule AND sometimes they are consistant for a few weeks and then go on strike for a while, See what I mean.

NOW, I THINK when they are kept in cages in pairs and trios the odds get better, BUT I am guessing now...anyone know better?????

My seramas run around all say in a huge pen and I think they are too busy socializing for such mundane stuff as egg laying... hahahahaha.........

well! today its raining and they are stuck in the coop! i put her in the nest box and see if she decides to lay.... yesterdays egg was likely laid at 1-2 in the afternoon yesterday! its around 1:40 pm here in Miami!!! so i'm hoping!!!! she is super tiny and weighs 20.50 oz !?!?!?!?! i'm hoping there is another one coming today!

Ol-jswartz - I am in Oklahoma too. I have had 2 Serama hens for almost 2 years now. I LOVE them, and I baby mine a lot. In summer, if they have solid shade with air circulating a bit, they seem comfy up to about 95 degrees. Once the temps get above that, I put a plastic cobra-style mister out near them (about $10 at Atwoods) and it drops the surrounding temp almost 20 degrees and really helps them out. Although mine don't really like to be wet, it keeps them safe from overheating. Ice in their waterers and chilled watermelon rinds to peck at are welcomed too. When temps drop, I bring mine in the utility room in a bunny cage. In my case, I am the wife who wants chickens in the house and my husband just shakes his head and asks why in the heck we have to have chickens in the house. I say because they came from Malaysia where it is warm, and they will get chilled if they are out in the elements, and they are precious.

If that is not an option, there is a website, and I am sorry I can't remember what it is, but they sell flat panel coop heaters that are supposed to be efficient, safe, and not a fire hazard.
