American serama thread!

I would recommend finding her a couple of bantam friends. Seramas are generally too small to get on well with LF birds, especially alone. OEGB, Dutch Bantam, and Silkies are all breeds I have kept with seramas. D'uccles also mix quite well with them.

Here is a pattern for you for a diaper I used for my Emu. Basically the same. Red is the leg holes, blue is a strap that goes around the front of the breast, and yellow is the edge which is cut from the sock and would be the front, and green is the tail hole. I just cut up a maxi pad and put it in the bottom to absorb some poop.
I've heard of these! They look nice and simple but when I was researching diapers it says that extended used can damage their wing carriage giving them life long "angel wing" and sometimes causing difficulty breathing (although I would assume that is from not graduating to a larger sock as they grow)
Oh my, that's neat-o Sumatra! Only thing I can think of is that it does seem to restrict wing movement....

Really interesting, didn't realize their physique was so different kukupecpec!

Well, I have 5 baby Seramas in the 'bator now 3 blonds and 2 darks. I have at least 2 that are pipped, but don't know if I'll get more to hatch?? I sure hope I do! My minimum was to have 8 to hatch so I might get 4 females, minimum. Ugh, I really hope more hatch!

and of course, the new aviary is not finished, and heavier than a SOB! How are we gonna get it into the house? Worse still, it's supposed to rain tonight, and it's out in the yard, LOL

WOW!!! You lucky duck!
Not a SINGLE one of my eggs has pipped yet =(
I'll candle in the morning if there is no pipping. I'm wondering if I locked down a bit early? I wrote in my calendar that Monday was day 19, but maybe I counted wrong...

I've never had problems with angel wing when I used these. A bigger sock is good and eventually a towel cut to the pattern. Just be careful and keep an eye on it and when they are big enough cut wing holes in it like I did. I use them on the seramas all the time and they don't seem to bother with the wings.

I will be picking up some Seramas from Laura on Saturday! A pair of splash Booteds, a Booted roo/Smooth hen pair, a trio of smooth, and a pair which is a Frizzle roo/Smooth hen pair and possibly, maybe, a Silkied pair. So excited to be getting new Seramas!

Sweet! Well I just might have to try this at the very least until my other one comes in! Thanks so much for the pattern!

Oh man you are so lucky!!!! I love her birds!
I keep ordering eggs from her but I just have such an awful shipped hatch rate. Turtle and Elena are from her, but I've only got Elena now.

For a baby goose the wings are smaller and I generally drape the wings over the top when I use it on my seramas. It only covers the back half of the bird where the legs are and the wings are infront of it.

Congrats on the chicks and good luck with the rest of the eggs. My eggs from Laura never hatched due to a cat attack on the bator.

Hummm, I sure do hope they start pipping for you soon! Mine were early, I just locked them down last night! I do have 6 out now, and 2 working their way out

I get enough girls!

Oh you are lucky! My babies are from birds I hatched from Laura's eggs and another person off ebay who had lovely pictures (Harriet) They will eventually be paired with my two Bhep boys, I really was hoping to get 3 girls for each boy, but we'll see....

Well, I took the last 6 eggs, put 3 under Hermione and 3 under Harriet. One might be dead, but the other 5 are moving and peeping in there, one has pipped. I do hope I didn't make a mistake, but I really want the girls to get over their broodiness, so hopefully they'll each hatch some babies??? This will also keep me from checking the incubator all night, LOL.

Good night ya'all!

Goodness, there are lots of bantam chickens in a big city like Miami! Have you tried craigslist.com?

I'm so excited, I hear chirping coming from the two nests I stuck eggs in last night!!! There is more than one (possibly more than 2!) I hope both of them hatched some chicks so they can both be proud mothers! Sirius is definitely a proud daddy, LOL.

I really hope they don't go broody again though.....

So I built this big "coop" for the house (neighbors can't stand my boys crowing, so they're house chickens 'cause I fell in love, stupid eh?) Anyway, I call it my Aviary, so it doesn't sound so .... farm in the house like,

I really should call it at least a cage, but that sounds horrible, so Aviary is a nice euphemism,

So this thing is huge and HEAVY! I don't know how we're gonna get it into the house!

Hubby asked me if I could take it apart again, oh dear no! And I didn't build the whole thing up yet either 'cause I knew it would get heavy, but had to build it outside 'cause I needed the room! We do have a sliding glass door ....???
