American serama thread!

I'm on my touchpad atm, so I'll think about it some and write in the morning.. But right now I'm thinking they would enjoy some extra height? With a. Roost? I made mine have a deep "tray" (built in) with deep shavings so I don't have to clean so often, LOL. I'll just use a dust pan and small broom to clean it out. I hope the high sides will keep the shavings inside. I caulked the joints to keep dust inside the coop...er aviary, but the front is open with hardware cloth (minus the first 10" at the bottom, which is my "floor tray". Each section has just under 3' of ceiling height with a roosting bar and is 2'X 3'. I seriously hope they will be comfortable in there! I'll give them outdoor time too.

Anyway, I was thinking, if you can keep your birds down to two trios, or groups, making them into two, double highs might be nice?

Well, my birds spent their first night in the "Aviary". Nobody used the roost!!!! Sirius, Hermione, Luna and Harriet slept on the floor in front of the "door" (not really in yet, just a vinyl hex curtain) and the boys, Ron and Cedric spent last night with their faces plastered to the vinyl curtain looking out forlorn, and I found them exactly the same way this morning as if they hadn't moved! LOL Hopefully I'm mis-reading them and they're enjoying the view from so high up!

Harriet is still brooding on invisible eggs. I don't know what to do about her! Will she eventually give up?

I want to get these babies into the aviary today, but my chicks are so small I'm wondering if they'll do ok on the shavings? I mean, they're on towels right now (the kind you buy at the hardware store, used white towels?, not my bath towels, LOL) I just didn't have paper towels, and this seems to be working nicely. Anyway, one of the chicks has a slipped tendon that doesn't look like it's gonna get better

and another is only coming up on a week old tomorrow, I believe. Do you think the shavings will be ok?

And where are the cute forlorn pictures?!

I'm sure they love it! They are just getting used to the new place. When I moved my big birds to the new coop/run it took them a few days to do anything besides sit by the door. if they escaped they went running back to their old coop. I think it just takes a week for them to realize this is their new coop. They love their home now!

Ok, here are my forlorn boys. I'm glad you prompted me to take a picture, LOL. Now I can remember this cute duo, who will soon get their own girls and separate cages! I'll venture they'll be too busy to worry about a wire cloth between them then?

And this is the aviary. It's 3 feet deep, 2 feet wide and about 7'-2" tall to the top. Inside they have about 3 feet of height. I made it way off the ground so I could clean easier. It's solid, I could climb into the top part and it didn't move. I was going to paint the roost, but I pooped out. It needed to get finished so I could start cleaning up the mess in the house

Obviously, I have more work to do, but it's functional at the moment...

I am having some super tiny babies right now from a new pair I got. I put shavings down in the brooder and then lay a paper towel on top for the first few days they are in there, so I can see if they eat/poop ok. Then they are on shavings from then on. I have the smallest Brinsea Brooder in my baby chick tub because it can be moved up and down to regulate temps.

Knock on wood....I have never had any problems even with these itty bitty ones. I just use fine shavings for them.
