American serama thread!

:lau   Too funny!  What is IB for seniors, and you're talking High School?  Hope you have a great time with her tomorrow!

Are you sure he isn't molting?  Check for the usual, mites/lice?  Nobody pulling them out?

Depending on the size, it could be that the nipple is too heavy for them?

Yes! Thanks! And its attached to the cage. She just doesn't pay attention when I show her!

Ugh, I just checked each of my chicks out and found two with hard balls of poop attached to their toes! They have a new clean coop, but these balls of poop, ugh! When I got them off, it seems that the tips of the toes may be dead? Blackened and smaller (like this happened so long ago, that part couldn't grow) I'm horrified! I wonder if it will fall off, or cause gang green and spread! I'm so worried. Has this ever happened to anyone else?

I've checked to see how many boys and how many girls there are by their comb coloring. Perhaps I need more time, because I only tagged 2 as boys? Though I suspect one other one of being a boy....maybe?

This is actually very interesting, I'm trying to work out my Sirius, Hermione, Harriet and Luna's genetics via what Sirius has sired, LOL. He defenetly has to have the brown gene, 'cause two are brown. I think they'll be solid brown but I don't know. They had medium creme bellies. Very cute. I think Black Beauty is a girl

She'll be a keeper, I love her!

The one with the slipped tendon can't be helped, at least not anymore. It's tendon is now taut and I can't move it. I'm really sad I couldn't help her, and I hope she can live that way without much pain? But there is no way for me to know if she is in pain or not?? Can anyone tell me if they've had a bird who lived this way successfully? She is WAY smaller than everyone else, and even the chick that was born a week after she was. This leads me to think she is not eating enough? But she does keep going, and gets around amazingly well, so I'm wondering if I should let her continue on or put her down. I just can't tell if she's in pain? Thanks for any help on that!
I have not had success with this.one I tried just to let her grow out and she ended up very crippled, then the others picked on her. It was harder for me having to out her down when she was bigger.
I am sorry, my advise is to out her out of what will be a miserable life. I know it is hard.
I have been having problems with the manure balls on toes also...............very frustrating....I keep them clean and just cannot figure it out to solve he problem. I use to use sand in their cage
but it was tearing up their feathers so changed???????

As I think about it, I did not have the problem when they were free range most of the day......they have been caged most of the time due to crappy weather...............Have not had black toes.............Good Luck

Good Grief, hit edit to correct a spelling error and it canceled the whole post.

Any way, Slipped tendon:
I have had his a few times .Never successful correcting. With the first one I had invested so much time and emotion into her I decided just to let her live.
Bad idea....it became worse, she became more and more crippled and the others picked on her..........
It was harder putting her down when she was bigger.
I am sorry I do not have a positive outcome to share. only that if they need to be put down..........the sooner the better.
I do think they are feeling pain.........................

About the manure balls .I am having this also.no black toes yet. I keep my cages CLEAN..............................
Here is what I am thinking.................My chickens have been caged due to crappy weather.
Last year when they were out most of the day......I did not have the problem...............so I am thinking I need to get them outside
where they will keep their feet clean just from the grass ect. Sorry I do not have information on the black toes.....perhaps post under diseases and illness.
I know I have read about frost bite there.
I use to use sand in my cages but it tore their feathers up................kept their feet clean???????????

I love black beauty.......................

MY little red has lost 8 of his tail feathers...........have not had this happen before and now am worried
that he may be lacking something in his diet?????
Any input appreciated........He appears healthy other than his tail .

Could just be due to molting, that is the first thing to go....

Generally speaking, by 4-5 weeks you will know gender. How old are yours now? About the slipped tendon, can you post a picture of this chick? The tendon slides in a groove on the bone, it is possible that the groove is malformed, missing a side. You know how a cooked chicken bone looks at the end, that knuckle looking cartilage, that is what the groove is. If that be the case then yes there is not much you can do for the little one....Is the leg in a straight position where ithas to drag it??? See what I mean about pictures?..

Perhaps it is that simple..............I have just not experienced them losing so many at once.
The little devil..................I am breeding him with two select hens and had hoped to sell a few eggs from the mating...........
Do I have a good picture of him with his beautiful tail?????????NO..........
lau.gif

Oh well.....I'm not really into selling hatching eggs anyway....................
It's just he is so pretty and a really sweet guy........................

As for manure balls stuck on toes.....try putting vaseline on the toes to help keep them "non-stick". What substraite are you using? What are you feeding? The poops are in the brooder too long, or there are too many babies in the brooder/cage. That is about the only thing that causes that...... hope that helps.

Well, the babies are doing great and growing well. I have two boys that I plan to show this fall, as they are maturing out quite nicely. I am getting around 3-5 eggs/week from my C-class pair. All of these birds are the ones from Laura at Castle Delight.

The 5 eggs I have set will be candled in 3 days and have been in about a week now. I candle on day 10 usually, but I never throw out any eggs until day 17 just before lock down. I throw out whatever candles clear on day 17 since those are the only ones I can tell for sure are bad eggs.

My birds are also super spoiled and I bring in a different baby every night to sleep in bed with me. They love it and always snuggle against my neck and pur.

If the girl with the slipped tendon is walking around fine and seems interested in food, then she will be just fine. I have had several that did this and lived full and happy lives.

I make hen aprons for my girls that have bare backs. I even have a few serama sized ones that I have made.

Poo on the toes means the pen needs cleaned more often. A build up of poo on the bedding will cause the toes to get caked with the poo and then it dries on and stays.
