American serama thread!

hello thread!

My son and i recently fell in love with the Serama at a local poultry show. We purchased a pair of birds that currently reside in my son's room since the weather has been pretty cold. Doesn't bother my LF laying flock, but I was told the little guys weren't cold hardy and i didn't have a warm set-up for them (don't you just LOVE impulse buys???!).

Sadly, the roo has lost all of his sickle feathers so he looks kinda tattered right now. but here a pics from when we purchased them in October.

Any tips for keeping their feathers looking nice? My son would like to show them in 4H and we would like them to look their best. I will work on getting some better "posed" pics, as I would also love to hear thoughts/opinions on quality. There are just now 1 yr old.

Thanks in advance!

How much would you pay for good quality, proven serama? chicks, eggs, and adult thanks

Here in Idaho, the local Serama breeder charges $50 per breeding quality pair, show quality birds are more. They do not sell culls, all of their "for sale" birds are at least 6mos old. A Grand Champion Roo sold for $100, boy was he GEORGEOUS!
Didn't ask about their hatching eggs, or single bird prices.

Will they still need a heat lamp or should momma take care of that?
Momma chicken should provide them heat if theyre cold because they'll crawl under her and sleep under her. But if you have cold weather still then you could bring them inside and provide a little heat lamp if you'd like. I live in California so our weather is usually tolerable to the little Seramas so i usually never have to do so

Keeping them on shavings and away from any and all wire will help tremendously. Wire is the #1 feather killer. For 4H, feathers do need to be in tip top shape. I cover wire with plastic sheeting, keep my birds on shavings, and they have plenty of room to move around without feathers touching anything. Also, I keep my show birds alone, not in pairs, so feathers aren't ruined with mating.

I got this tiny little guy today and was told he is Serama. Is this true? I'm not framiliar with the breed but love this lil guy for sure!

I am sorry to tell you that he is not a serama. Maybe there is alittle serama blood in him but with the wide wattles, and the unusual comb, the very large white ear lobes, very long legs and an OEGB looking tail, he is a mix of some kind. BUT he is still pretty to look at. Hope he has a nice personality to go with his looks! ENJOY him :love

Has anyone ever purchased from mcdonald seramas?

Where is McDonald serama located? I have never heard of them?
To answer your other question about cost of a proven pair of show/breeding seramas, if you are really serious about getting the best, it will be costing you in the $100's of dollars. AND if you want a PROVEN pair the breeder would be someone that belongs to ASA and shows at ASA shows....
I hope that helps.... :)
