American serama thread!

My serama pullet was found yesterday morning on her back in the coop. We brought her inside, and she was breathing heavily through her mouth. Then she just died. What happened? She was perfectly healthy the day before! It was so sudden.

SO SORRY for your loss.
There is such a thing as sudden death syndrome which can cause this type of thing to happen.

Why is there sudden death with these guys?

Sudden death syndrome - when I started on BYC 6 years ago I heard about that often(in many breeds) except they just called it "flip," Just suddenly a bird on it's back, dead. It was believed to be caused by a heart attack. I don't know if any research was done to validate that

I have heard that Seramas can carry a lethal gene that can kill them in the egg or shortly after. I'm not an authority on any of this. I just did some research years ago when my friend wanted to buy a couple serama hens. Knock on wood, her seramas have been the most robust breed she has had in years.

My Serama hen will be the death of me. She's laying regularly but will notbrood I have a phoenix sitting on her eggs now by is there a way I can get her to wanna brood?

Does he try to smoosh himself into you? Mine wiggles his little butt as far back into my hand/shirt/etc as he can get.

Yeah! He cracks me up, he's so tiny. I mean, I knew that the chicks were tiny but the scale puts him at 12 grams & some change! He's knocked out asleep until he hears me then he looks like popcorn hopping all over the place til I pick him up. Just want to eat him up!

I LOVE the little hops! Mine always looks like his feet barely touch the ground. Sometimes I wonder if he's actually just blowing around. Lol! Is yours really LOUD when he wants you? I swear. Mine is all lung and fuzz. Nothing like the 6 new ones I just hatched.

" All lung & fuzz" I like that! I've been at work all day but before I left I was able to hear the thing all over the house, then dead silence. So I was thinking he fell over dead. I whistle & he starts peeping all loud again! Such a silly thing!
