American serama thread!

Right you are. Rather ticked a myself for not being more observant. The hen isn't sick; just very thin. A few days of eating should fix that.

It should. Don't most broody lose some weight, when are sitting on eggs. Would make sense right? We can't prevent them from getting thinner if they aren't moving as much. Do you follow what I am saying?

Yes. Broody hens lose weight; a lot of weight, but they should not lose so much they are nothing but feathers and bone either. This a good reason, too, that people not allow broody hens to set past three weeks without monitoring the bird's health carefully.

My chicks are two week old, a bit less. Some are considerably larger than others. Some do not appear to have the right posture, while others do not have vertical tails. At what age do you start culling your birds? Those that I have that seem lacking, are they likely to improve with age?

I would wait until they are at least a couple months. It will be hard to tell at 2 weeks who is truly good for breeding

Thank you for your response. In the past I have looked no further than a nice healthy chick. Now I have to learn how to accurately cull the flock so the next generation shows improvement. A fun and interesting hobby.

Jerry waits until at least 5 months supposedly.

Honestly that is an excellent idea. They can keep typing up for as long as two years, I think I've read, for the slower maturing lines? And as frustrating as it can be to feed and house a bird that turns out to be a cull that long, in the beginning it sure teaches a lot. Helps develop the eye.

Half the birds I've sold before the 6 month mark I've kicked myself for after seeing updated photos from their new owners later. Learning patience w/evaluating type was probably the hardest lesson I learned getting in to this breed.. sold a couple birds I'd kill to still have now because I was impatient in the beginning
