Jasper doesnt really have a "good" side right now. Picked a fight with Jake, or Jake's son Jack, two of our spitzies. (I think it was Jack as Jake doesnt have a mean bone in his body)

Didnt get any pics of my silkie/serama Phoenix this time. Was too busy snuggling with her and forgot. Sadly we lost her daughter Jasmine this past weekend. We think something got ahold of her when I wasnt looking. She was a sweet girl and will be missed.

I enjoyed looking at the pictures; especially of Pippin. I have a number of serama-smooth and frizzled, but a feral dog broke into my coop last year and killed all the silkied serama I had. Come spring I hope to be able to buy some silkied serama hatching eggs; if I can find them close to TN.

I'd love to see a picture of your Phoenix cross. I have a few Phoenix crosses; 2 crossed with Polish and 4 chicks that are Yokohama/Phoenix/serama crosses.

Lol, I keep forgetting that there is a breed of chicken called Phoenix.

Phoenix (that's her name) is not a Phoenix breed of chicken. She is 50%silkie and 50% serama. She looks very much like a miniature silkie without a big poof covering her eyes. We named her Phoenix when she was a chick as she actually died as a chick and my good friend @Faraday40 and her daughter brought her back to life. They also managed to ressurect her sister, but she died officially the next day.

Mama had gotten out of the nest and the babies tried to follow, couldn't get back in and they were laying stiff on the floor in the morning. It was in the 20's. No movement, no breathing. They brought them back with a hairdryer.

So that is why she is named Phoenix.

Will grab a picture of her later. It was warm enough for some outside time today.

:th:hit Oh No! Not Jasmine! You must be feeling miserable. I know she was a favorite. I'm so sorry. :hugs

It's odd that she would be taken. Your other 2 girls are silkied & can hardly fly. I would think Jasmine would have had a better chance at avoiding predators.

Pippin looks very pretty. Is she a good cuddler for you? Jasper still looks as handsome as always. i'm sure he'll be a good daddy when spring comes. (Just tell him to stay away from the Spitzes!)

@homeschoolin momma
The lonely-only chick who hatched 10-27 looks a lot like Pippin - just has white skin instead of the yellow. I just grabbed her & took a few pics to show you.

She may end up being my smallest serama yet. Not very big for 9.5 weeks old.

I brought her outside for a second to get some pics with natural light.

In this pic you can see how she has the same light gray undercoat on the wings.

Poor thing is very, very frightened of other chickens. She panicked just now as we passed by the mini serama coop on the patio. She insists on being alone in her storage tub and only interacts with people.

I can't blame her since she saw her sister killed. I'm going to try bonding her with a chick the next time I hatch.

I thought the same thing. She was wickedly difficult to even see because her brown blended in with everything. And she was such a great flier too. She could easily clear a room or the garage. She must have not even seen it coming. I only ever saw a small tuft of feathers by the back door. Not enough to even suspect an attack really, but we just cant find her anywhere. Its been more than 5 days. I dont think she would survive this long in the cold. She was a favorite and a sweet bird. Grandpa liked to hold her when letting them out for me on occasion. But im sure there will be more babies soon from pippin and jasper.

Pippin is not so much a snuggler as Phoenix is. She like to be outside. She constantly runs out when the door is opened. I'm having to lock her up in the top just to clean so she doesn't run all over the garage. Do you know how hard it is to catch a little chicken in a garage with 3 cars?:barnie:gig
But she did enjoy her time this morning and bread treat.

I can only picture that!

Our seramas love to run out of the patio coop the second the door is opened. They can be quick! They don't go far at all - They just want to scratch at the welcome mat. They also love to climb all over us like a jungle gym. Avoiding them is more of a challenge than catching them.

DD still sleeps with the 2 roos in her bedroom. Teddy's really the only one who crows, and as the senior male, I doubt he allows the younger guy to crow. Teddy usually crows a few times at 6am when DD wakes up. After she turns off her light & leaves the bedroom, Teddy goes back to sleep. (Lazy little rooster!) Teddy used to beat up any other rooster around, but we've been keeping the last rooster we hatched in with him since he was a chick. Perhaps that's why the little guy is permitted to stay. We had some very pretty boys we had to get rid of (since Teddy's going to stay and he disliked the competition). The boys get to go out during the day & visit the serama hens when the weather is above freezing.

Here's our back up rooster. No real name yet since we were never sure if Teddy would allow him to stay. Since he's not beaten to pulp, I guess Teddy feels this boy is not a real threat.

This makes a great holiday story. Phoenix are beautiful; in a very different way than serama, but serama will always be my favorite.

I find Pippin to be quite small. Jasmine was actually bigger than her despite being younger. She lays the cutest tiny eggs!
I think your lonely serama would do well being a big sister. Little tiny chicks are much less threatening. Or maybe just a mama by the time spring rolls around. I thought Phoe was about to go broody just before Christmas, but she now doesnt seem to care and has stopped laying for a mini molt. If she goes broody, maybe your lonely could have a buddy before spring. I would trade out Phoes eggs for Pippins though since hers are smaller and can get a few more under, as well as Pip and Jasper are both pure serama. Unless you want another micro chicken!:lau
