American serama thread!

Not yet. But there's a nice sized hole with its beak poking out and chirping. Ive been checking every two hours or so. Hoping it will zip today.
Have you done an assisted hatch? If not, I am here and able to guide you through it. Kimmi and I have done many assisted hatches successfully. I will check the computer frequently should you need help or until I know you don't need assistance.

If the chick is peeping loudly then it is near time to hatch. Break away a tiny piece of shell so you can see the membrane covering the chick. If it is milky-white with plump veins running through it, it is too soon. Any presence of blood also shows that it is too soon to hatch. Carefully wipe away any traces of blood so it does not dry on the membrane and make hatching even harder. Be very careful when handling the egg; once pipped the shell can become weak and crumble easily. Try to be as quick as you can so the chick does no become chilled.

Should the membrane have a more transluescent look and no blood, or very little, present, carefully peel back the shell and membrane that covers the chick to expose the front half of the head and a bit more of the body. Try to stay away from the pointed end as much as possible. After you peel away the membrane over the chick's head use a soft tissue or cloth and rub the membrane edges back over the remaining shell so the membrane does not dry to the chick and impede its progress as it tries to hatch. With this done return the egg to the incubator to warm up. 15 to 30 minutes later peel away more of the shell and membrane until there's enough gone so the chick can wriggle out when it is ready. Do not expose the head completely or pull the head free from its original position. I never remove chicks completely from the egg. If any yolk is not absorbed by the chick's body the chances of survival are greatly diminished. The chick will emerge when it's time. Good luck.

Chick is zipping now. Has made progress about 1/3 the way around! I still keep looking every hour to make sure. Thankfully Mom is being very patient.
Should progress stop, it is now safe to assist. Zipping means the yolk has been absorbed by the chick's body and if i isn't then there's something else wrong. You should have a chick very soon. :jumpy :thumbsup
